Hi,

We have just got new SETVs in Cambodia and we are about to travel back to Thailand on Sunday by bus via the Poipet border crossing, are we likely to be asked to provide proof of funds or proof of onward travel by Thai immigration at the border? We are UK citizens with British passports.

Thanks,

Jon

It's possible but highly unlikely.

As a rule they only tend to ask for such things when suspicious that you are not a 'tourist' and are looking for reasons to deny or justify entry.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like we'll probably be fine but will make sure to print out our flight tickets home and a recent bank statement, I think I have one from a few weeks ago.

Yes i can confirm, i did a visa run in the beginning of january this year for a visa exemption and was not asked for nothing. Stayed in Poipet only few minutes.  Had a longer visa history in my pasport. Only some simple questions were asked, but the IO satisfied with my answers  and all goes  well without any problems. With a SETV it should be ok, but sometimes it depends on the officer and your pasport history.

I would take proof of funds and onward travel to be on the safe side, Poipet has a long history of I/O's being difficult at times

Better safe than sorry, especially in the current climate

Poipet is probably the least-friendly crossing into Thailand you could choose.   If you have no previous / frequent visa-history in Thailand, you will probably be OK.  If you just left recently, expect possible trouble, though you might get lucky.

If it were me, I'd get off the bus in Battambang, and take a taxi to either of the crossings near Palin.  Should be about $5 per-person for the taxi - and you won't wait in line for hours at the border there, either.  Once you cross, onward to Chanthaburi, then where ever you want to go from there.

Thanks for advice. Will make sure to bring Proof of Funds and POOT with us just in case. We do have one recent SETV but no visa exemptions. Hopefully with all the right documents we should be fine even if they do hassle us a bit. Just to be sure, for the Proof of Funds will it be the same amount that we had to have for when we applied for our new SETV = $1000?

I think it's 20,000 Baht or equivalant (sp) so $1000 is more than enough

It's not really a visa run if you don't get a visa.

I've crossed at Ban Laem, not far south of Poipet 2 days ago for a visa exempt (30days).
We were over 10 farangs on visa run, none been asked for anything special, in-out within an hour.

No. The requirement is a minimum of 20K baht (or equivalent foreign currency) in cash, or travelers cheques. Baht is best.

I have entered Thailand from Cambodia scores of times, and in spite of an extensive stamp/visa history never been asked for anything, although in recent years I have avoided the Poipet crossing.Any other crossing than Poipet , with your minimal visa history your chance of being asked for anything are close to zero .

Wow, didn't realise it had to be cash. Guess we'll risk it with our flight tickets and a bank statement and if they ask for cash we'll have to just head to an ATM.

I see a possible technical issue here of being able to draw the best side of £400 each from a Cambodian cash machine unless you have already notified the UK bank that you intended to travel there.

For nearly the same cost as the ATM fees, you could alter your point of entry to one of the border-posts near Palin, which are friendly, and very unlikely will give you any trouble / questions entering on a valid Tourist Visa.

If you do try Poipet, and are refused, you can still use one of the friendly crossings to the South, though it will require back-tracking to Battambang (cheapest option) or hiring a taxi to go direct from Poipet (fastest option).

What do you mean with POOT?
