QUEBEC CITY (Reuters) - Five people were killed after gunmen opened fire in a Quebec City mosque during evening prayers, the mosque's president told reporters on Sunday.

A witness told Reuters that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre.

"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” said the mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui.

Quebec police on the scene said there had been fatalities and that two people had been arrested.

"There are many victims ... there are deaths," a Quebec police‎ spokesman told reporters.

A witness said a heavily armed police tactical squad was seen entering the mosque. Police spokesman Etienne Doyon declined to say whether there was still a gunman inside the mosque.

Police later tweeted: "The situation is under control."

Yangui, who was not inside the mosque when the shooting occurred, said he got frantic calls from people at evening prayers. He did not know how many were injured, saying they had been taken to different hospitals across Quebec City.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter: "Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families."

Like France, Quebec has struggled at times to reconcile its secular identity with a rising Muslim population, many of them North African emigrants.

In June 2016, a pig’s head was left on the doorstep of the cultural centre.

"We are not safe here," said Mohammed Oudghiri, who normally attends prayers at the mosque but not on Sunday.

Oudghiri said he had lived in Quebec for 42 years but was now "very worried" and thinking of moving back to Morocco.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said in a tweet that he was "profoundly saddened by the loss of life and wounded."

Incidents of Islamophobia have increased in Quebec in recent years. The face-covering, or niqab, became a big issue in the 2015 Canadian federal election, especially in Quebec, where the vast majority of the population supported a ban on it at citizenship ceremonies.

In 2013, police investigated after a mosque in the Saguenay region of the province was splattered with what was believed to be pig blood.

In the neighboring province of Ontario, a mosque was set on fire in 2015, a day after an attack by gunmen and suicide bombers in Paris.

Zebida Bendjeddou, who left the mosque earlier on Sunday evening, said the centre had received threats.

"In June, they'd put a pig's head in front of the mosque. But we thought: 'Oh, they're isolated events.' We didn't take it seriously. But tonight, those isolated events, they take on a different scope," she said.

Bendjeddou said she had not yet confirmed the names of those killed, but added: "They're people we know, for sure. People we knew since they were little kids."

$1,000,000 question. Was it Muslim on Muslim or non Muslim attackers?

Quote

A man who said he was a witness to the attack told Radio-Canada two masked suspects entered the mosque. The man said the men appeared to have thick Québécois accents and shouted “Allahu akbar” as they began shooting. He said the bullets struck people who were praying.   Link

A witness told Radio-Canada the gunmen wore masks, the CBC reports.

“It seemed to me that they had a Quebecois accent. They started to fire, and (while) they shot they yelled, ‘Allahu akbar!’ The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head,” said the witness, who asked not to be named. “There were even kids. There was even a three-year-old who was with his father.”

I am leaning toward Muslim on Muslim, but I can imagine it could be either way.

Canadian PM says mosque shooting a "terrorist attack on Muslims"

By Kevin Dougherty

QUEBEC CITY (Reuters) - The shooting at a Quebec mosque during Sunday night prays which reportedly killed five people was a "terrorist attack on Muslims", said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge," Trudeau said in a statement.

Five people were killed after gunmen opened fire in a Quebec City mosque, the mosque's president told reporters on Sunday. A witness told Reuters that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre.

"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” said the mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui.

Quebec police said there were many victims and deaths, but did not confirm the death toll. They said two people had been arrested, but there were no immediate details on the suspects.

A witness said a heavily armed police tactical squad was seen entering the three-storey mosque. Police declined to say whether there was a gunman inside the mosque at the time.

Police tweeted later that the situation was under control and that the mosque had been secured and occupants evacuated.

Yangui, who was not inside the mosque when the shooting occurred, said he got frantic calls from people at evening prayers. He did not know how many were injured, saying they had been taken to different hospitals across Quebec City.

"Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families," Trudeau tweeted earlier in the night.

The shooting came on the weekend that Trudeau said Canada would welcome refugees, after U.S. President Donald Trump suspended the U.S. refugee program and temporarily barred citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the United States on national security grounds.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said police were providing additional protection for mosques in that city following the Quebec shooting. "All New Yorkers should be vigilant. If you see something, say something," he tweeted.

Canada's federal Liberal legislator Greg Fergus tweeted: "This is an act of terrorism -- the result of years of demonizing Muslims. Words matter and hateful speeches have consequences!"

'NOT SAFE HERE'

Like France, Quebec has struggled at times to reconcile its secular identity with a rising Muslim population, many of them North African emigrants.

In June 2016, a pig’s head was left on the doorstep of the cultural centre.

"We are not safe here," said Mohammed Oudghiri, who normally attends prayers at the mosque in the middle-class, residential area, but not on Sunday.

Oudghiri said he had lived in Quebec for 42 years but was now "very worried" and thinking of moving back to Morocco.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, which has stricter gun laws than the United States, and news of the shooting sent a shockwave through mosques and community centers throughout the mostly French-language province.

"It’s a sad day for all Quebecers and Canadians to see a terrorist attack happen in peaceful Quebec City," said Mohamed Yacoub, co-chairman of an Islamic community center in a Montreal suburb. "I hope it’s an isolated incident."

Incidents of Islamophobia have increased in Quebec in recent years. The face-covering, or niqab, became a big issue in the 2015 Canadian federal election, especially in Quebec, where the vast majority of the population supported a ban on it at citizenship ceremonies.

Six killed in 'terror attack' on Quebec mosque

QUEBEC: -- Six people have been killed and eight injured in a shooting at a Quebec City mosque in Canada, according to latest reports.

Witnesses said gunmen opened fire during evening prayers when at least 40 people were reportedly inside the building. Two people have been arrested, although some witnesses reported seeing three attackers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has been Tweeting his support for religious minorities in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s restrictions on travel from a number of majority-Muslim countries, has condemned what he called a “terrorist attack on Muslims”.

“While authorities are still investigating and details continue to be confirmed, it is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence. Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear.”

Police were quickly on the scene and put up a security perimeter around the mosque.

Incidents of Islamophobia have increased in Quebec in recent years. Last summer the Islamic Cultural Center as it is also known, was a target of vandalism when it was smeared with what is believed to have been pigs blood on one of its gates during the holy month of Ramadan.

In 2015 in the neighboring province of Ontario, a mosque was set on fire one day after an attack by gunmen and suicide bombers in Paris.

"...According to one witness, the attackers were men who "dressed in black", had "Quebec accents", and who shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the shooting...
Two suspects were arrested. Details have been withheld by the Quebec police, however, according to TVA Nouvelles, one of the detained suspects had a Québécois background, while the other had an Arab background

"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” said the mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui.

Yes it's barbaric that it's happening "here"…ok if it happens elsewhere…what a %$#^&!

Ironically this comes just a day after Trudeau tried to stir the pot with his nonsensical pronouncement that all refugees were welcome in Canada.

Have at it, mate!

Now you're turning into a fake news source. Or show the source where Trudeau says "all refugees were welcome in Canada."

There have been 164 terrorist attacks linked to the 'Religion of Peace' in the last 30 days in 27 countries.

1196 people have been killed.

1621 were injured in these attacks.

Admittedly these were mainly Muslim on Muslim attacks but do we really want to risk the possibility of this sort of conflict developing in our countries.

Trump doesn't and who can blame him.

I've been looking for some sort of comment from the Trump White House, but nothing. Regardless of who was behind it, the least he could do would be to offer condolences. Maybe he is still up tweeting about SNL and important issues like that?

This attack at the Canadian mosque reminds me of the December 2015 mosque fire in Houston, USA.
After it occurred, the Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations urged authorities to probe the fire as a possible hate crime.
"Because of the recent spike in hate incidents targeting mosques nationwide, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this fire" said CAIR-Houston Executive Director Mustafaa Carroll.
However, it turned out the arsonist was actually another muslim who worshipped at the mosque, Gary Nathaniel. Last December he was sentenced to 4 years for arson for burning down the mosque.

Mr Trumps not looking to score political points with you. He's rather busy securing america's porous borders against potential trouble.

Plus the full facts of this shooting aren't out yet. It seems to me like that what the Trudeau kid said about welcoming all sorts of refugees could have sparked this act too. Just proves Mr T was right in doing what he did.

Reap what you sow... today Canadian prime minister slams Trump for his actions...
Soon he will be opologising to his countrymen/women for the slaughter that will inevitably follow as he allows more "refugees" into the country..
France & Germany are paying the price now.

Trump is the only one with the balls to say it how it is... no papers no entry !!

The shooting, killing, injuring of innocent people is never fair play!

No matter who the victims are, no matter who the perpetrators are.

We agree on very little, but we agree on this. Terrorism against civilians is just plain wrong no matter what.

You are correct. But as long as there has been religion, there has been more murders, deaths and massacres in the name of religion (than any other cause). And as long as we have religion, nothing will change. Religion litigates, judges and divides the masses - and holds back human progress.

Expect these tragedies more frequently in the west - Trump loves to litigate, judge and divide the masses also. Populists and terrorists will step up the back and forth in the near future. Sorry to say, but the conditions are primed.

Don't see the point of blaming everything on religion. Athiests have slaughtered plenty of people too. Moreover, it is not plain yet who was behind this tragedy.

Not everything, just death count and ignorance (assuming people believe what they are taught as factual truth).

What athiests slaughtered religious people? I don't remember. But athiests are killed. Either way, chalk up those numbers in "religious deaths" too.

It doesn't matter who killed the people in the mosque, for my point to be made. They are religious deaths.

You are blaming the victims for being attacked? Isn't that a little strange?

The Soviet Union and Communist China murdered many millions and it was not about religion. You can't legitimately blame religion for all the problems in the world as related above. In this particular case, no one is really sure why it happened yet.

I'm not blaming anyone. It was tragic what happened.

More people have died in the name of religion (any and all) throughout history, than disease and secular wars, including the 2 countries you mentioned above. It's a sad and overlooked fact. The concept of religion has held back mans' progress since the beginning, and still does so.
