ROME (Reuters) - More than 1,300 migrants were rescued in 13 separate missions in the Mediterranean on Friday, bringing the total helped over the last three days to more than 2,600, the coast guard said.

The migrants, who were aboard 13 vessels, were saved in the central Mediterranean by ships from the Italian coast guard, the Italian and British navies, merchant ships and vessels operated by non-government organisations, a statement said.

Another 1,300 were rescued on Wednesday.

The voyage from Libya across the Mediterranean to Italy is currently the main route to Europe for migrants.

A record 181,000 made the journey last year, most on flimsy boats run by people-smugglers.

More than 5,000 are believed to have died attempting the crossing in 2016.

In the latest in a series of measures pushed by the European Union to stop migrants reaching Europe, Italy launched a new fund on Wednesday to help African countries control their borders.

And they will keep coming until they are rescued and returned to Africa, along with those that arrive under their steam. Oz has banned all boat people from ever entering the country, and they have simply stopped attempting it, and dying in the process.

So if half the population of Africa, say 600 million people, decide they would like to live in Italy, that should be acceptable?

I guess he means if the Italians  would have to make them Italian the Italian government would find back to reason

and use their navy in a more constructive way

Death is no deterrent.

They know about the multiple drownings and still they try the crossing.

They will walk, and try and swim the Bosphorous if necessary.

Nobody has a "solution", because anyone with the slightest vestige of wisdom knows that there's no stopping 2 million years of human migration (History).

Humanity has contrived to make this time the best ever for rapid, mass migration.(Modernity)

Creatures that are not fitted to adapt to changed environments become extinct (Darwin).

Acceptable or not, that's the way it is.

Parts of Rome looked like Africa last Sept, these people are not 'migrants' they are illegal immigrants and need to be sent back

I'm sure Mrs Merkel will state it's every EU nations duty to make these illegal economic migrants comfortable, and provide for them. Italy will be sure to send them down the pipeline so all can share in the humanity.
