Thailand Holds Key Rate to Shield Growth as Trade Risks Mount

- Rate held at near record-low 1.5% as seen by all economists

- IMF forecasts Thai economy to trail Southeast Asian neighbors

 

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s central bank held its key interest rate near a record low to shield the nation’s economic recovery as the threat of trade protectionism mounts.

 

The one-day bond repurchase rate was left at 1.5 percent, with monetary policy committee members unanimously in favor, the Bank of Thailand said in Bangkok on Wednesday. All 22 economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicted the decision.

 

Thailand’s economic growth is lagging peers in Southeast Asia, with the International Monetary Fund forecasting expansion of 3.3 percent this year.

And that's where foreign and domestic investors will go - other ASEAN

This means the Thai government will need more deficit to finance growth for 2017.

Good question! I mean just because this article was written four years ago but it hasn't happened yet does it mean the points he made are wrong?
