BANGKOK: -- FREE HEALTHCARE services for thousands of employees of local administrative bodies are being threatened by budgetary issues.

The National Health Security Office (NHSO), which has managed the medical-benefit scheme for the employees, announced recently that funds were running out.

If the government does not allocate Bt9 billion more from the central budget to the scheme in the next few months, available funds will run out in April. At present, the scheme covers 613,650 employees of local administrative bodies.

Dr Sakchai Kanjanawattana, the acting secretary-general of the NHSO, said yesterday that the Interior Ministry would need to provide Bt9 billion for the scheme to stay operational in the current fiscal year, which runs until September 30.

Well, the government is busy looking into the purchase of submarines. If and when bought, think about the sense of pride people will feel knowing their country has submarines. Free healthcare is overrated anyway.

They need 9 million baht? How much did the government pay for that jolly in Hawaii. The one with the female civilians who are experts in looking pretty and being submissive.

Is this more evidence that the government is running out of money? Can't imagine the elite of the government being too concerned about the deplorables and the needy in the community.  "I'm all right Jack" springs to mind.

Submarines, combat planes and tanks are much higher priority. Military toys allow them to publicly strut their stuff and so boost their egos.

The little Hawaii junta junket was 21 million,  and who was it that said "we just had normal food like noodle's" and then out come the standard Thai's taking photo's of their food and posting it with salmon, caviar, and bottle or two or three or four of wine and the plebs can foot the bill...  And what came out of it after it hit the new's?  Stop asking questions, you are causing misunderstanding,  it's all ok,  it's normal, everything is just fine find those that leaked the photo's and charge them.....

And the nut job's that support these public purse thieves usually stay well away from news items like this and yesterday's story the gov't is running out of money because they know they would be trying to defend the indefensible...!!!

I feel sorry for those who have family members that need medical treatment and without the medical assistance the family's asset's/family farm would be up for sale.

They need 9 billion baht according to the story I'm reading. That's just petty cash for these big spenders I would have thought. They had 74.9 billion baht in the local Treasury Reserve slush fund as at yesterday so what's the problem. Or has that by now disappeared down the gurgler?

There may well be 74.9 Billion Baht in the local Treasury Reserve - but that money is quite likely, how can one put it: "spoken for"?

When the current I'll informed rumpus about the disappeared reserves which was so unfortunately accidentally mentioned dies away and everything has been squared off no doubt then they will look at the problem...

this isn't a story about submarines. the military run scenarios so when something happens they have a plan instead of looking like silly girls... same same The Pentagon. and even if your map of Thailand shows only the Gulf of Thailand in the middle.... you can bet the Thai military has a slightly more realistic map... one that includes the Bay of Bengal. yes?

you have to have some kind of response available if say India were to whisper "let the boat people from Dhaka into Thailand or else because we already are taking too many of them".... not that anyone would use these things... the USA uses them only just for show as well.... yes?

they work just like missiles do... and are not intended ever to actually be used.. but that you have them and somebody else DON'T.

one scenario. a "good" one. just in case you missed last year's ACP study.. for one that was under review for several years... and has James Hansen's name on it.

Your post beat most of us to the same written conclusion. This government has its priorities reversed and they are slowing picking away at the healthcare coverage till there is nothing left. They will not do a frontal attack just nibble around the edges and then stick their finger into the wind to see which way the wind blows.

Who is copying who ?   In the UK, the National Health Service is collapsing because the government cannot afford to fund it properly.  But we can afford to spend billions of pounds on a submarine-borne nuclear deterrent; more billions on the Hinkly Point nuclear power station which the populace will have to pay for for hundreds of years to come; and a high speed train (more billions !)  so that people can get from London to Birmingham 20 minutes quicker.  Total insanity .........

are they eligible for the 30baht plan ?

all Health plans need to be  looked at , pretty much worldwide ,

First people are living so much longer and its just going to get worse , with many more people getting to 90 or 100 years old ,  but really in poor health for the last 10 years but still "alive" , so the costs are going to be much higher than when the Health care plans were developed.

The numbers do not work anymore , and there are not enough younger workers willing to fund the Health care system

Cutting costs  is one way , stop building Hospital "Palaces"  which cost so much more just for the ego of the a few big wigs ,

Start training 1000s of nurses  and pay the schooling for the top students to go into nursing  ,  after they graduate pay them a decent wage too.

And in a big city every Hospital does not need the newest 5 million dollar machine ,   SHARE with the other hospitals,,,,,

and I know this will never happen , too many egos involved and too many pockets to fill :(
