PATTAYA: -- Police in Pattaya arrested a 26 year old ladyboy who they say helped in stealing a phone from the pocket of a Jordanian tourist in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Salmeer Alwaneh, 61, was on his way back to his room when a ladyboy and his female friend started groping him and suggesting some entertainment, reported FB Pattayanews.

Soon thereafter Salmeer realized his phone was missing and he reported it to police in the area.

Chayaporn Praphatsorn, 26, was quickly arrested and identified by the victim at the station. But Chayaporn denied theft saying that the culprit was a woman referred to only as "Mai".

Chayaporn phoned Mai telling her to bring the phone in to police. Instead, Mai handed the phone into the from desk of the Pattaya Resort in South Pattaya Road and fled.

Police didn't believe the lady boy's story especially as she had previous for the same offence.

She was charged with theft and police are now hunting for the woman called Mai.

Doesn't sound like he was putting up much resistance.

Why people don't repel these people before they get anywhere near them is beyond me, unless, of course, they are enjoying the attention.

Repel how exactly? It's a well-known pickpocket technique the world over - get as close to your victim as you can while distracting them at the same time. It's also true of people handing out "flyers". They position their hand with the flyer in such a way that your instinctive reaction is to take it

It has never happened to me, or any friends I have met over the years here.

Strange that, isn't it ?

Pattaya has become synonymous to LB snatching gold chains and pick pockets

among other vices, what are the police doing beyond fining them 1,000 baht?

Nothing....  and by the look of things, nothing is here to stay...

If you mean having a flyer handed to you that is surprising.

If you mean having labyboys attempt to grope you well then you need to get out more, or I need to get out less.

They are hard to avoid on some Pattaya streets.

It has happened to me a  twice in bangkok as I was walking down the street(nightime) a few years ago, but never once in many years afterwards. Getting groped is easy when you're not ready for it and putting up a fight could be a problem, 'cause these folks travel in packs at times. Best just to get the hell out of there as I did.

very easy actually, it's about being aware and switched on to what's going on around you. having spent a lot of time in central and south america, where petty theft is endemic, and having had nothing stolen i can assure you this approach works.

Going for early morning strolls 7am on lower Sukhumvit would occasionally attract lady boys working in teams.

It's hard to fight off 4 hands at once as they grope front and back side
