but i think i was stoned for years so not sure

but this time retired with a top  young wife

Living full time in Thailand since approx 8+ years.

 

First lived in Pattaya, still have a house there, but we SELDOM go there and now we live in a very small (+/- 80 houses) village in Rural Buriram (around 15+ kms from the nearest town), and I am the only Foreigner living full time here.

....since 2004 on a full time basis, if I can every get my affairs sorted out it'll be less than that each year, just for the sake of variety and on a trial basis I plan to live in the UK for up to 6 months per year.

Hope it works out for you,    as for myself l have been given all expenses paid back to UK for a holiday by the family but because of the aggro with the UK Embassy of taking my Mrs with me even though she was there for 6 months and then again nearly 2 years they can stick it.

Yep that would be me!

 

However In my opinion length of stay is surely not so significant as breadth of experience.

 

By way of example an unmarried ex state employed guy in his late 50s living in rented accommodation in Chiang Mai, socialising mainly with Expat friends and going to the expat domino club twice a week, who has lived in Thailand for 10 years and also believes the occasional couple beers at night in a local bar is  'living the life' is not a person I would readily accept in any way as an expert who could make reasonable input on any Thai lifestyle choice other than the one he leads. Unfortunately boredom gets the better of some of the 'resident' posters and they venture into other areas and pontificate.

 

Those of us who have similar 'experiences' can immediately identify with each other on the forum, and, also find it rather easy to identify the 'wannabe experts' who appear to be of the opinion long term residence (or even shorter term in some cases!) is the key to knowledge, rather than hands on experience.

 

I enjoy the plethora of posters on Tvisa, gives me a good laugh at times the attempts to be knowledgeable and experienced - backed up by a wiki quote.   I enjoy posting regarding my own real life experiences, easier to expand on the topic if required.

 

Consequently refrain from posting in the threads " I need advice from people who have lived in rented accommodation in Thailand over 10 years on how to go about building a house...."  especially as response from the 'experts' will probably be 'don't do it'   

 

You see in my hands on experience I think building a house is rewarding and fun - I've built two - but then what would a 'visitor' know

Coincidently I have also built two houses, one in the UK and one in Thailand and frankly there is no comparison between the two, not any aspect of the process, the design nor the materials used.

I think the topic is where do you live, not how many houses you've built. If you're trying to say that even though you don't live here, you suggest the three week visitor is you, I would question how much hands on knowledge of Thailand you can have acquired in that timeframe, not to mention how you managed to acquire it whilst building two houses as well!

The point of my initial comment was indeed to belittle the casual visitor who poses as a long term permanent resident, such people are dishonest and do a huge  disservice to the newly arrived who are looking for accurate current information and advice. I'm not sure what it is about social networking sites such as TVF that makes people want to either contribute or be seen as a source of knowledge, even if that knowledge is wrong, I haven't worked out the mechanics or motive behind those things yet. The problem is that I see sites such as TVF as a source of knowledge that needs to maintain  integrity, insofar as it's possible to do so. Historically that has been hugely difficult to do with posters claiming this that and the other as fact, all of which have been absolute nonsense!

 

As for your 30 x 6 argument, I have to say it's highly highly highly improbable that a person would follow such a regime for such a protracted period, but it does indeed support your argument plus it makes for entertaining reading! Sorry if that offends you, it's just the way I view this matter at this time.

I have enjoyed 3 x 5 year relationships with Thai women, I am now in a relationship married for ten years, I am employed I get to spend 2 holidays a year, for reasons stated I obviously spend them in Thailand. Your statement above once again re-enforces my original comment.

 

Breadth of experience creates a greater understanding than a mere continued presence in Thailand.

 

I can agree that while I may be the exception,  and, especially in the Legal and visa section, current information and accuracy are required, and, there are others who continually perpetuate myths, unfortunately, for your perception, not the exclusive action of the none resident.

Of course we are done, I punch holes your ridiculous generalisation attempting to lay the blame for misinformation in the forum on members who do not live in Thailand. Oops forgot about the pig slaughter drinking the warm blood!!  Then again no idea what you were dining on.

Just a word of explanation, I arrived in the town early evening and went to the policebox to ask where the nearest Hotel was, There was not one for miles. It was in the next town.The officer suggested I stayed in the police box that they could practice their English. Apparently they could read English but had little or no opportunity to actual converse in English. So I stayed 3 days.

I first came to Thailand in 1980 on my way to the Macau GP.
Came back in 1998, was a good time for the £! Since then every year 6 months Thailand and 6 months UK, Chiang Mai for the last 5 years, previously Hua Hin.

I work 60 hours a week so have little desire to build something I cannot own outright in my name, luckily my employer covers my housing costs.
