Excise tax chief assures new alcoholic law will be fairer for business operators and consumers

 

 

BANGKOK: -- The Excise Department today dismissed the new excise tax structure on whiskey, beer and wine now widely shared on the social media saying the actual collection won't be as high as what it appeared on the tax structure.

 

Instead, the director-general of the department Somchai Poonsawat assured that the new excise tax structure would enable efficiency in tax collection, create fairness for business operators both in and outside the country.

 

He admitted that  if the new excise tax law becomes effective 180 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette, the department will get higher tax.

 

But at the same time, the department will adjust tax rates so as to not put higher burden on business operators passing the burden to consumers.

 

He said the calculation for the new tax structure was based on tax collection from maximum rates while in actual practise, the collected rates wouldn’t be as high as appeared in the new tax structure.

 

He said he couldn’t say how much the exact rates would be as this would be fixed again but assured that the new rates wouldn’t be higher than the existing rates.

 

He said the Excise Department will adhere to the government’s policy that advised that the new tax structure must not affect the burden of business operators and consumers.

Not sure about the state of things...some of the news circulating on reliable thai facebook sites shows that beer will costs almost double the amount at retail prices and so will wines etc. This country is getting ludricious.

Does anybody know what all this smarmy doublespeak means? Telling the truth doesn't seem to come easy to the government.

Governments, taxes. Fairer? Come on!

Well if they wipe out the cheap plonk, then it's fairly guaranteed they're diverting a chunk of tourists elsewhere.

I think that may well be the point.

There was a strange new smell coming from under the stairs, apparently it was some new medicinal soup which had an affect on the people who participated in sampling this liquid ensuring a jolly good nights sleep was also mentioned whilst some said it was good for the body ( they said this Thai naturally I am just translating).

If I understand it correctly, the new tax will be on the retail price Vs wholesale. So no change in rate but how the tax is applied,.

Increasing tax on booze - it's becoming more like the UK here every day!

I though it was made in the toilet ( according to mr happy ) maybe because the room is small and easier to control the temperature ?

What was it, about 2 years ago now, tax on cigarettes and beer/booze was increased and domestic beer cans and bottles got smaller by 10ml?  Certainly seems to be a long term, plan carried out incrementally to reduce level and duration of public backlash.

Nope   and no Aspirin or witch hazel either.

Try Chula Besaj pharmacy on Rama 4 for Aspirin but I dont hold out much hope for witch hazel or brewing kits.

Just must say that because the storm against the published taxes got out of proportion and hard to handle.
Now in the making. Tax revision 2 "The fairer one" Soon coming to a shop near you!

I agree what a bunch of gobblygook. Would be nice if someone could cut through all the BS and tell us what they are saying. Off shore operators??? If they get to stupid on this bar sales will go down. 

Does anyone know an example when governments have done something fairer for anybody. I am sure the Chang and Leo gang will have some input on this.
