Controversial visits to South Korea and Japan hit over cost.

BANGKOK: -- THE ELECTION Commission (EC) yesterday sought to justify its recent controversial field trips to South Korea and Japan, insisting that the fact-finding studies were undertaken for the good of Thailand and its future prosperity.

The public has questioned why the overseas junkets, both cut short amid a storm of criticism, were necessary when the Kingdom did not have a scheduled election.

EC member Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, who returned from Seoul on Saturday, yesterday posted on his personal Facebook page clarifying the reasons for trips, which had been scheduled to run from Wednesday until yesterday.

Somchai said he had been welcomed by the chairman of the South Korea’s Supreme Court and nine commissioners, including the South Korean Election Commission’s vice chairman, who gave a presentation on the country’s overall political situation in relation to elections and vote-casting.

There was a Thai "government" trip to Universal Studios theme park in Singapore that was called out on social media.

It was defended as a learning experience to manage tourism.

The "good people" just see these sorts of these things as their birth-right.

One does wonder why any government official does 'field visits' abroad. The Thais have the be the most reluctant people on earth to introducing new ideas from abroad. They like doing things their own way.

Well they certainly learned nothing about discriminatory pricing for tourists! They have only managed to stuff that up big time!

And from that presentation Somchai learned:

  • Thailand has no scheduled elections
  • Thailand EC has nothing to do currently other than looking for entertainment
  • South Korea's political situation has no comparison to Prayut's absolute power over Thai people
  • South Korea isn't Thailand, is a republic and not a monarchy
  • South Korea has a democracy while Thailand does not
  • South Korean Election Commission know their job vs. Thailand EC
  • etc.

In short things that could be learned without ever leaving Thailand, ie., search the internet!

Shopping, first-class travel, accommodations, dining and sight-seeing.

You forgot to mention the fact that these trips would have given the chance for a whisky taste test, ie comparing the best Suntory with the single malts they tried on their previous junket to Scotland.

"Vote-casting" and "elections", nothing stimulates the brain like foreign concepts do, right Somchai?

At least they've learned to stop posting the silly selfies on their FB pages during these boondoggles. That just whips up the pesky Phrai.

Seems odd that they've kept the Election Commission employed all these years? I wonder what sort of monthly salary these chaps are drawing?

IN LIEU OF PENDING POLLS, ELECTIONS OFFICIAL TONES DOWN TRAVEL PERKS

BANGKOK — With the likelihood of general elections this year waning, the nation’s top elections official launched a Facebook offensive to prove he’s busy and earning his salary.

Projecting austerity and accountability, Commissioner Somchai Sritthiyakorn posted five directives regarding upcountry travel on Monday afternoon to Facebook and tagged his subordinates to make the message clear.

“No luxury suite or pool villa … I won’t swim while staying,” Somchai wrote.

AN ENEMY OF ELECTION AT HOME, THAI EC OBSERVES SCOTLAND REFERENDUM

Thailand's military rulers now say elections will be not be held until October 2015, and only if "national reconciliation" has been achieved and the political climate is deemed stable.

Just "trips for the boys, jobs for the boys". Happens all over. You can always justify it to yourself when wanting to go.
