PATTAYA: -- Pattaya police have embarked on a 30 hour course to learn English.

It is hoped they will become confident and effective in communication with foreigners.

Pattaya news reported on Facebook that officers from crime suppression, traffic, investigation and detective units were attending the five day course at the Diana Garden Resort hotel.

Officers from Pattaya, Bang Kaew and Phasee Charoen stations would take part in the English lessons after orders came down from national police HQ to be ready for the AEC (Asian Economic Community) era.

The cops were learning skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing. The aim was to be "confident in the use of English" and to be able to "effectively communicate with foreigners".

The teacher came from the police training school and officers would be learning 6 hours a day from March 27 to March 31st.

Essential phrases like such will need to be learned first.

1. We collect insurance payment monthly.

2. We need reward to help recover stolen property.

3. We cannot help unless you pay.

4. You make traffic violation. How much you have?

5. We busy. Come back tomorrow.

6. Donations to the Policeman's Ball most welcome.

First train them in the job, pay them a real wage to do the job and then make sure they do the job while also learning English which should have been taught at school as its the world language and no other will take over as some may think.

This sounds like one of those joke courses which only allow the attendee an opportunity to stay at a nice hotel away from work. 30 hours of english will be pretty much useless.. Especially since they know already how to demand what they want from you.

How can you be "ready" for something that's already started? It's like watching a drunk slam his car into a brick wall and saying, "Golly jeepers, we must breath test that dastardly fellow before he has an accident."

So then theyd have a higher wage and the tea money.

You really think you could pay a wage high enough for the ones at the top to match what they get now?

I'm surprised they're not learning Chinese instead.

Despite being (by a long way) the most 'populous' language on the planet - Chinese is not widely spoken outside of China or Chinese-speaking countries. However, English is still the 'language of business' as well being the pre-eminent language in commerce, law, computers, airline travel and numerous other professions. Indeed very recent research has revealed that many countries (even the French - who are arguably one of the most 'anti-English speaking' countries in the world!) are now adopting English as their main language.

The slides seem to be rather pointless.

If they don't know enough English even to understand the word 'what,' how are they supposed to read the helpful explanations (all in English) on the slide?
