PM: Govt does not impose ban on local fisheries

BANGKOK, 05 April 2017, (NNT) - The prime minister affirmed that the government does not impose a ban on small-scale fisheries.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha was referring to the Fisheries Department's plan to regulate local fishing activities, clarifying that the measures aim at preserving Thailand's natural resources and preventing foreign fishing vessels from invading Thai waters and vice versa.

General Prayut reiterated that the regulations will keep those engaging in local fisheries in check and clearly define the operation boundary.

He stressed that the Thai government's commitment to addressing issues in the fishing industry has been recognized by the international community, which has expressed a desire to espouse Thailand's approaches to solve similar issues in other countries.

imposing a ban would be the best thing they could do for the thai fisheries. When you see them dragging nets with 1/2" mesh through the water and taking every living thing in it you have to wonder how much they regard their own future. When you see people using bait jigs to catch 1" fish and filling buckets with them it is no better, thai people have no regard to the future and by letting it happen the govt is very much to blame. This country needs to enforce the laws and set limits but it may already be too late for some areas, they have simply been denuded of all life and the amount of rubbish and contaminants that are in the waters does not help, unfortunately thai people have no regard at all for their countries environment or the future of their fisheries
