Education summit set for early May

By The Sunday Nation

The Education Ministry in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation will hold the International Congress on Education for the 21st Century (ICE 2017) on May 3 and 4 at the Berkeley Hotel Pratunum in Bangkok.

The event is held under the theme “Making a Difference: Shaping a New Learning Paradigm for a Sustainable Southeast Asia”. It will serve as a platform for 600 executives, educators and stakeholders to share perspectives on education agenda, innovative methods in teaching and applicable ideas in shaping a learning paradigm for the new generation.

During the opening ceremony, Education Minister Teerakiat Jareonsettasin will deliver the keynote address on “Sufficiency Economy Philosophy for the Achievements of Sustainable Development Goals through Education”.

Paper presentations and discussions by experts and researchers from various organisations will also be held seven sub-themes. They are Teachers Education and Lifelong Learning; Making Accessible and Inclusive Quality Education Happen; Enhancing Regional Competitiveness through STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Education; Digital Learning in a Borderless World; Education in Emergencies and the Role of School Community; Bridging Skills Development for Global and Local Demands, and Strengthening Citizen Engagement in Education and Community Development.

It is all well and good having conferences about education with other leading countries. I would be interested to see which education departments and 'so called experts; come from.

The problem here as everyone knows is changing the archaic MoE who lack vision and are reluctant to change. Hearing how the best educators implement educational pedagogy is great but only if the people that make policy and practice, are willing to change. So I expect nothing new to happen.

“Making a Difference: Shaping a New Learning Paradigm for a Sustainable Southeast Asia”.

Surely they could have put a few more meaningless buzz words in there.... "holistic".... "student outcome based"..... "future oriented".... etc etc

"...innovative methods in teaching and applicable ideas in shaping a learning paradigm for the new generation."

That should fly well with the teaching establishment members of the old generation who are set in their ways of doing nothing, and will resist any change. Their focus is on themselves, and they couldn't give two s...ts about their students' welfare or preparation for the future. The learning paradigm will be no different in 2050 than it was in 1950.

Well said and accurate, as said, these folks are the major roadblock to change and especially to changes in teaching / learning methodology, and as a group they are unfortunately powerful.

Thailand seems to have a knack for reinventing the wheel.  Perhaps they should hold the summit in Singapore or Vietnam.   They them selves  may in fact learn something.

They may well learn something, but would they put that learning into practice? Doubtful!

Another useless summit - I came in 1985, brought up three children in international schools, because I considered the local education facilities ...... lets be polite and refer to sub-standard.

Today, 32 years later, my grandkids are going ...... to international schools as well because .... stay polite and refer the entire system as still sub-standard.

Only un- or poorly educated voters can be taken for the big ride on Thailands Merry-go-round and the oligarch establishment managed to keep up the good work for the last decades.

In the future, while I will no longer be around, it will be proven, that Thailand falls behind many of its ASEAN neighbours as Thais are as isolated, education wise, as one or two generations ago; how sad!

As long as education and money must go in the same sentence ...........

Impressive conference title! Too bad Thai leaders are stubbornly set in their ways and a fancy conference is just a paid holiday from the office. Nothing will come if this because the Elites don't want an educated mass of citizens.
