"Every occupation has good as well as bad people" says cabbie as 70,000 baht in valuables returned to Indian tourist

BANGKOK: -- An honest cabbie did his bit to try to restore the image of taxi drivers when he returned a handbag to an Indian tourist yesterday.

The tourist had left the cream colored bag containing 50,000 baht in Thai money, more than 23,000 rupees and other valuables including a gold necklace, reported Sanook.

Driver Panumart Jaranchon found the bag on the back console after he had brought an Indian lady called Preza and her husband Abhishek Kamawat, 35, to the Amari Watergate Hotel in Pratunam from Pattaya on Wednesday.

The couple were traced from the lady's credit card after Panumart contacted 1644 at the FM91 radio station.

Panumart said he always tried to do good things and, though this incident was being publicized, he tried not to shout about it.

In a week dominated by the attack on a Brazilian model by a taxi driver rapist he said: "Every occupation has good and bad people. When I hear about drivers doing bad things I feel terrible".

He was given 5,000 baht as a reward for his honesty.

This must be the offset story for the fatal BKK - Tak - Pattaya story. Myself, I always enjoy BKK to Pattaya via Chiang Rai!

But never in a taxi!

I thought it would be the offset for the model that got raped. Have to concoct another feel good cabbie story then just in case.

Yes, every occupation does have good and bad people. In my occupation I had to provide a criminal check from home and from here. I've never committed any crimes so my criminal check came back clean. If it had been reported that I had committed a crime, I wouldn't have got the job.

This is why we do criminal checks. To lower the chances of having truly bad people in jobs. Especially jobs where you work for the public. Remind me again - what checks were done on the double rapist?

But 70,00 Baht returned - let's all forget this silly nonsense of bad taxi drivers until it happens again.

The taxi driver contacted a radio station, not the correct authorities.

Just another attention seeker.

contacting a radio station was more efficient than contacting any authority.

Besides, this particular radio station (Jor Sor 100 or Traffic FM station) specialises in this and this is where anybody in thailand will contact first in such cases. Most taxis also tune to it for any updates.

not much time was wasted till Thai bashing started :coffee1:

That's true but in the case of taxi drivers there is a compelling case for cynicism. In my experience the majority of drivers are ok....but we tend to remember those that are not, maybe one in ten or so.

Back before meters , negotiating a fare for every single trip was a complete pain...but at least once it was done there was never any confusion, deceit or attempts at ripoffs.

You reflect back on better times but that's progress???

if the story was different, i.e. no cabbie coming up the resident misanthropes would be salivating "yeah right! yada-yada an Indian with cash and a gold chain. yakety-yak whom is he trying to bé-éss bla-bla?" :cheesy:

Don't tell that to a lot of the TVF crowd

Yes, this sentiment is fine when criminal checks have been done. There's only so much you can do to check that someone is fit to be in a job. If their record and history is clean, and they then go out committing crimes after, then you can say "there are good and bad people in every occupation'.

What is not acceptable is not checking or ignoring someone's criminal history. Especially a two time rapist who is then entrusted to safely drive around a young woman on her own. Most readers are indignant towards the attitudes of those responsible.
