Hello,

My work permit/ non imm B visa extension ceases 28 October 2017.

I want to stay in the country for another 2-3 weeks legally without receiving a penalty at the end.

What is the best way to go about staying another couple of weeks after my extension/ work permit end?

Can I do a border run before my work permit ends (let's say the 25th of October) to get a 30 day tourism visa? Or do I have to go after the work permit and extension expire? Is that the best solution?

My brother is flying in to travel with me in November and I would prefer not to do a border run when he is here.

Thank you,

John

(If it affects anything currently my extension has a stamp for 15 NOV 2017). But I have ascertained that your extension of stay becomes null when your work permit ends.

When you leave the job and wp is cancelled you have 24 hours till overstay. So. Yes you need to leave and come back with a new visa. What kind is up to u. 30 day visa free or 30 day or 60 day tourist visa.

If you hate the idea of doing the border crossing in November, you could agree with your employer to terminate your contract a few days before Oct 28 (clearly, you will suffer some salary cut). All you need is a letter from them stating what is your last working day, eg Oct 25, and with that you can cancel the WP on the specified day. Then you must leave the country immediately.

About your last point: legally, cancelling the WP automatically voids the remaining validity of your extension of stay. However, several people on this forum have argued that the immigration officer at the airport wouldn't necessarily know about it.

Thanks for your help. I may risk it or I may do a border run. Not sure yet.

If work asks for my passport and takes it to immigration along with my WP to get it marked then I'll definitely do a border run.
