BANGKOK: -- FIVE STATE agencies that oversee royal affairs and security have been transferred to work directly under His Majesty the King, according to a new law that took effect yesterday.

They are the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary, Royal Household Bureau, Royal Aide-de-Camp Department, Royal Security Command and Royal Court Police. Previously, those agencies were under control of the government, military and police.

The 2017 Act of Regulations on the Administration of His Majesty’s Personal Affairs, which details the transfers, was endorsed by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn on April 28 and published in the Royal Gazette on Monday. It took effect a day after being announced. A remark at the end of the announcement explained the reason for the transfer.

“These agencies do work related to HM the King and royal family members’ business, and they need to follow traditional procedures. The work is different from other agencies overseen by the administration, so it is suitable to reassign a new status for them to work directly under His Majesty, it said.

Under the new law, passed by the National Legislative Assembly, the five agencies that come under royal custody shall be not regarded as government agencies and shall be independent from the laws on public administration. The King may run those agencies at his pleasure.

Also, the government is required by the legislation to allocate funds to support the agencies’ work. Revenues earned by the agencies do not need to be sent to the state coffers as national income.
