35 undocumented migrants arrested in Nakhon Si Thammarat

By The Nation

Police in Nakhon Si Thammarat arrested 35 people on Friday who had been smuggled from Myanmar and abandoned in Tha Sala district.

The undocumented migrants were arrested after the village headman of Moo 2 village in Tambon Tha Khuen alerted police that a group of foreigners were hiding at a deserted shrimp farm.

The seven woman and 28 men were taken to Tha Sala police station. Nine of them are Muslims.

Police learned from one of them that they were heading to Malaysia.

They said their families hired a broker to smuggle them to Malaysia so that they can work and send money home. The broker would collect the money once they reached Malaysia.

They were picked up by two vehicles from Ranong’s border but they were abandoned in Tha Sala after the smugglers spotted a police checkpoint.
