The Labour Ministry plans to launch a screening process to catch Africans who are working illegally in Thailand with only a tourist visa.

Department of Employment Director-General Waranon Pitiwan said on Friday that the move was in response to many reported cases of Africans with tourist visas being caught trading jewellery, particularly in Chanthaburi.

He said the department will check trading companies’ registration and work permits to ensure they are abiding by the law.

Citing a Chanthaburi Immigration Office report, he said 700 African nationals entered Thailand via the eastern province and obtained a tourist visa or non-immigrant visa type O.

There are 306 jewellery trade companies in Chanthaburi which have 562 African employees who obtained proper work permits. They included 442 workers from Guinea, 72 from Mali, 12 from Gambia, 11 from Ivory Coast and 537 from other African nations such as Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, he said.

Officials also found that 14 Africans – 12 from Cameroon, one from Ghana and one from Zambia – worked as English language teachers.

Waranon said the department’s Chanthaburi office would discuss the issue with related agencies to find further solutions.

Waranon warned that immigrants wishing to work in Thailand must obtain proper work permits from the department or its branch offices, or face up to five years imprisonment and/or a fine of Bt2,000 to Bt100,000. People could also call the department’s hotline 1694 for more information.

The last story on this relating to Africans in Chantaburi, had been found to all be acting within the law. A lot of posters criticised the racist nature of the raid, based as it was on race and rumour, not actual information. So having failed dismally on their first racist raid, and convinced that can't be right, they are going to go after them again. I pity the poor soul found with a 2 day overstay, or a visitor found inside a business premises without a work permit.

A few years back Africans came to Vietnam under the guise of playing football. In no time they had set up prostitution and drug rackets and predictably drawn attention to themselves. The Vietnamese didn't mess around. They rounded them up and sent them packing to the nearest border; never to return.

That seems to have fixed the problem. They have completely disappeared from the scene.

Message there for Thailand. The problem can be fixed. A little application is all that is needed.

Faint hope for that when the there are so many on the inside on the take.

Have a maths problem here.

306 jewelry companies who employ 562 Africans with work permits. This is made up of 442,72,12,11,and 537 Total 1074 Africans, maybe immigration should start looking in the jewelry factories for illegal workers.

I think you will find that the real motives behind this, are because the Thais don`t like people from poor countries staying in the country long term.

Everyone knows that once people from the poorer nations go abroad and begin to realise they are onto a good thing, it`s not long before the word gets around and then start bringing over their families and their mates. The same happened in the UK then suddenly the flood gates were opened. It is also known that there will be many undesirables and criminal elements among them and if left to get out of hand, it is very difficult to get rid of them once they gain footholds. The same applies with people`s from South Asia and the Middle East.
