YALA, 26 May 2017 (NNT) - Thai Muslims have started stocking up on food staples ahead of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Markets and grocery shops in Yala province have been particularly busy amid a rush for fresh and processed foods. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad, according to Islamic belief. Muslims are to forego food from dawn until dusk during this period. Despite changes in shopping behavior, the prices of fresh meat and seafood remained mostly unchanged.

Muslims across the country are expected to look for the new moon this evening. If the new moon is seen, the fasting month will commence tomorrow. If not, the holy month will start from May 28th. In Yala, the activity is observed at the moon observation pavilion in Yaha district.

The Sheikhul Islam Office will announce the result of moon observations, which will be broadcast on NBT between 7:40 pm and 8 pm.

In the month of romadan they fast during the day,eat until late at night then go to school or work sleepy and hungry. Not worth a damn all month .Usless lot.

Your profile says you have a high 'community reputation'. How does one get that?

Fasting is from sunset until dawn. Most muslims manage it very well and I have complete respect for them, being able to work and study during this month. Please respect them too.

You sure about that? I thought it was sunrise to sunset. If it was way you say, they would be fasting during the hours of sleep? Are there a different sect of Muslims now?

I am constantly amazed how the guys working with me in Indonesia and Malaysia could make it through a rough day's work without food & water. In Indonesia I ran at least two drilling programmes through Ramadan using man portable diamond drill rigs in steep terrain. The workforce was far from useless. Hat's off to the them, they have my respect.
