When and if Thailand's relative economic progress reaches a level that exceeds the means of those that come for this then it will shift to another place. This will happen only if money is distributed evenly which in my experience does not happen anywhere.

As long as a demand and supply for sex exists there will be a sex industry, only the buyers and sellers may vary over time.

Leave sex alone. The money from it flows to all Thai people.

Disproportionately, gangsters and pimps first with the workers and family well down the pecking order.

Honestly.....what other reason to be there?  The raw sewage in the ocean?  The farang police pulling you over twice a week?  The girl that says "I love you" and forgets to say "short time"?  The dishonest barmaids (whores) that all lie for each other AND rip you off?  The sleazy condo owner that changes the lease terms AND rips you off?  The back stabbing farang?  The street vendor that charges you 200 baht for some fruit and then charges a Thai 25% of what you paid for the same thing.  Nope!  It IS ONLY the slit.  Nothing else there is of any value.

well it's the top reason, i agree, but not the only reason (weather, ease of access to other asian countries etc. are other reasons) but 99% of male farangs are here because sex is easily available, cheap  and convenient and IF it stopped most would leave

A big part of the problem is homemade and the farangs just profit from. As long as no laws exist regulating the support of children and woman in case of a divorce and the men can just walk away, there will be always women who are forced to go to the bar to earn some money to support the children and her parents back home.

Nice to know I'm one of the 1% elitist farang who have something between their ears as well as their legs.

Many years ago, when I first started working in Thailand, I read a report from the UN that estimated that 25% of the GDP of Thailand was based on the sex trade.   That would have been in the very late 80's or early 90's.   It stuck in my mind enough that I actually read the report twice, because 25% seemed really big.   It included all the ancillary businesses and money that surrounded the sex trade, like those working in the bars as barmaids/bartenders, etc..   It also has to be remembered that Thailand was a very poor country at the time with upwards of 70% of the population living below the poverty level.

At our work, we had to attend a seminar conducted through the Ministry of Health, which centered on the AIDS epidemic, which was hitting Thailand very hard at the time, with no viable treatment.   He gave us numbers of the people involved directly in the sex trade, and it was a very large number.

At that time, there was little attention paid to the age of those working in the sex trade, so there were a lot of pretty young girls (and boys), working the bars.

The thing that struck me about all of this was how extremely entrenched the sex industry is in Thailand.   It was not a shadow business and it was found pretty much everywhere.

Unfortunately, because it was a long time ago, I can't provide any links.

The only way to end the image of sex tourism is to end sex tourism.  They only way to do that would be a massive crackdown in Pattaya, Phuket and parts of Bangkok.

So, how would they do the crackdown?

Shutting down the bars would just drive the girls (and boys) out into the streets.  Mass arrests of the girls who provide the services would be ineffective if it just resulted in a lecture and a 500฿ fine.  Sending the girls off to re-education camps wouldn't go down too well, so there seems to be no good way to cut off the supply.

Demand, however, could to reduced to a trickle, by arresting a couple of thousand foreign sex tourists!  This action, however would have a very negative effect on the tourist numbers and income!

IMO, the red light districts will be re-assigned, less raunchy or just bulldozed over due to the prime land.  Yes, been the talk for years.

But really, the real action is online and this Is the future Of p4p.

Touchy touchy. Sorry if I offended. I wasn't implying you were not in the '1%', just poking fun at the ludicrous statistic. If a Thai posted that as a statistic you'd be up in arms!

My wife's only 9 years younger and does have a brain as well as decency, work ethic, attractive personality and a healthy sense of humour.

News flash, brothel to be turned into a library, owners expect to make just as much money.

Library owners say they will only stock pornographic material and all staff will be open minded 20 year old girls from isaan who will wear mini skirts and no under wear

Where can one find this library? It sounds great!

Only 20 years? A guy told me when I first came here to make it 30 years difference.  I agree as at 62, a 42 yr. old seems to be a little older then I prefer. A 30 to 32 year old is just about right.

Prostitution is almost as important to Thai culture as their perverted version of Buddhism is. It's not going anywhere.

They may clean up the farang side of things so they can appear proper to the rest of the world, but Thai on Thai prostitution will be here forever. It's just who they are.

Why do people keep associating the sex trade in Thailand with foreigners. Its a drop in the ocean compared to the Thai sex trade. Every town has its mini red light or twinkly light area. Just take a night bus through Issan and see all the twinkly karaoke bars with the girls all dolled up.  I used to ride with a Thai bike group. We would go away on trips and every town visited they would be off to the local girly scene. Its so much bigger than bangkok pattaya and phuket.

Yes, and attributing what some call a "farang problem".  Last I have seen the majority of guys visiting the venues in Pattaya and Bangkok are Asian, not Falang.

This is about sex tourism, not the domestic trade.
