Office of Chularatchamontri declares Idil Adha Day

The Office of Chularatchamontri has declared December 31, 2006 as Idil Adha Day for Hijri (Islamic) Era 1427.

The announcement follows the information about moon sighting that the Office of Chularatchamontri had received and the result of moon sighting on December 20, 2006. Judging from the information received, the Office of Chularatchamontri analysed that there is no reliable evidence that showed the moon was sighted. The Office therefore declared Sunday, December 31, 2006 as the first day of Dhul Hijjah Month in the Hijri Era 1427.

Thai Muslim people nationwide are invited to perform religious activities on the day.

Muslims In Thailand Celebrate Aidiladha On Separate Days

Confusion emerges on the date of Aidiladha in Thailand when its seven southern provinces will be celebrating it Saturday while the others on Sunday.

Patani Islamic Religious Council chairman Abdul Rahman Daud said the original date for Aidiladha in Thailand was Saturday, the same as Saudi Arabia, but Thai Muslim spiritual leader Chularatchamontri had sent a letter Friday to change the date to Sunday.

"Initially Chularatchamontri has declared Saturday as Aidiladha. But after the Friday prayers, he changed it to Sunday," he said when contacted Friday.

Abdul Rahman said the regional Islamic religious authorities did not have time to change the date as it had been announced to all Thai Muslims that Aidiladha would be celebrated on Sunday.

"We in Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala and several other provinces will celebrate it tomorrow (Saturday). I think several provinces in the North will celebrate it tomorrow too," he said.

It is understood that other provinces that will celebrate Aidiladha Saturday include Songkhla, Satun, Patalung and Trang.

"Previously, such a confusion happened due to the country's poor communications system but it should not occur these days as whatever is happening in Mecca can be seen live on television," he said.

There are some four million Muslims in Thailand out of its total 64 million population with 82 per cent in the south, while other provinces with many Muslims included Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Muslims in Malaysia will celebrate Aidiladha this Sunday.

It takes 3 wise men to spot the moon. The sighting of the new cresent moon is important in determining the start of the months.

Think we can gather 3 wise men here on TV to look out for the moon between beers?

Can we arrange to have Donz, Terry57, and ColPyat in one place?
