Orange-Juice?

Anybody with a good hint for good, not sweetened OJ at fair price? Buying in bulk, Makros brand used to be quiet good and fair priced, but has disappeared from the shelves, it seems.

Do you refer to "Brooks" in the 1.2 liter can?

This has vanished from our Makro also.

The bigger Tesco's and TOPS still have it for slightly higher price (65 Baht at TOPS).

 

The other alternative is looking for orange juice in 1 liter cartons with "Valencia" in the label/name from "Malee" brand.

 

Thai step daughter likes Brooks but this Valencia is too "bitter" for her

I also prefer the Brook, and noticed it has gone from the Makro Shelves, but at Foodland it is available as always at 55 Baht which is cheaper than Makro.

 

I settled for a few weeks for Fresh at Makro, which was 45 Baht a liter, but that increased to 52 Baht this week. A whopping 16% increase.

 

The Malee is far too sweet.

 

By the way, the Brook tomato juice is also by far the best I've ever found.

 

Makro's brand is tangerine juice, also far too sweet, and was still there last week.

I'm talking about the Valencia, have it in the fridge right now, and will not be bought again.

 

Everyones taste differs but sweeter than brook, and too sweet for me

Best one for me is the gallon sized bottle of fresh orange juice in Macro, under 300 baht.

sorry for being naive, but why not purchase a juice extractor, a good supply of oranges and teach the maid/Mrs/GF  how to make the milk?

Water is down by mixing half a glass of juice and half a glass of water. Problem solved. Think of the orange being the male and the water being the female and when they get together as 50/50 they are in a marriage. Everytime you poor yourself a glass you are the priest committing the marriage ceremony between the orange (groom) and the water (bride).

My preference has been for Harvey Fresh which comes from Australia. The price keeps creeping up but sometimes it goes on special at Big C or Tops and when it does, I stock up in bulk. Depending on your luck, it varies upwards of 79 baht a carton and over 90 in Villa but I saw it at 69 baht last month in Tops. I am the only one who drinks it in the house so it lasts ages. Everyone else reckons it is too bitter and they stick to Malee and Tipco which is too sugary for me.

A Valencia orange is not a navel orange. It contains seeds and is favoured as a juicing orange.

Can get from the market ( not supermarket ). Not sure if seasonal though. I used to squeeze my own as prefer natural food if possible.

Most oranges here are crap little juice and will cost loads more than the Macro juice, makes no sense to me to make your own.

Chabaa ( spelling may not be correct ) Valencia is the one I go for....and any of the other juices made by this company. It has been a few months since I was in LoS but the price is around 45 baht for a box the size of the one shown above from Malee.

Chabaa tastes terrible and too sweet. If you want natural juice make it yourself.

just a quick word...not that I am trying to clown down aged folks,

but kindly be aware of certain issues of gastric acidity that an excessive amount of orange juice can ignite...not to mention other issues from this lovely fruit if not consumed with moderation....enjoy and be healthy

If the Makro juice is like most here it is made from concentrate. Concentrate has had all the goodness stripped out, unlike squeezed.

The oranges I used had plenty of juice.

I see they have a hard time distinguishing Valencia from Navel oranges here. I just bought some Valencia oranges at Tesco that were marked as navel oranges.

The only orange juice I like is freshly squeezed. Unfortunately, due to the high cost of good oranges, it's a waste to juice them.

one of my all time constant dissappointments every time I visit Thailand. I miss my tropicana or similar brands of not from concentrate Orange Juice.  But the girls more than made up for it.

It says something like dilute 1:4.

Typical for commercial use.

Not usually offered for private consumers.

At least I can't remember having seen this in a western supermarket.

 

"BROOK" in the can is clearly labeled:

No it's not, it is pure fresh orange juice, and has a best before date which is only a month or so.

 

Concentrate has a best before date of a year .
