Phuket beach warning lights, ‘after dark ban’ to prevent tourist drownings

PHUKET: -- The Phuket Governor is considering a blanket ban on the beaches after dark among a raft of ideas to help prevent people, especially tourists, from drowning at Phuket beaches.

 

Governor Norraphat Plodthong called for the after-dark ban at an emergency meeting held yesterday (June 15) at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket headquarters (DDPM-Phuket).

 

The meeting was called after two people drowned and many tourists were rescued after entering dangerous surf at Phuket beaches this week.

Ban the roads while at it. Much more dangerous. 

Hahahahahahaha! One can't make this stuff up. A couple of people drown and there's all this fuss, whilst its carnage on the roads.

Why the after dark ban? People are drowning in broad daylight! And how would it be policed? The biggest danger to people on the beach at night is being robbed by ladyboy gangs!

 

Extra funds are needed to bolster the general safety on the beach by improving the training and increasing the numbers of lifeguards, particularly at this time of year. 

 

 

Hmm methinks knee jerk reaction.

Just ban swimming altogether.  And make the beaches off limits entirely after dark.

 

Drowning problem solved.

 

Not really, but the perception problem will be licked since they can't really blame us when people swim where it's prohibited, can they?

 

On an aside, be prepared for some nasty public displays in broad daylight when people can't hump in the water after dark...  It's a bucket list thing.

hmmmm.......basically only an idiot(ess?) would swim in the unlighted sea at night particularly in Thailand with its dangerous beaches

Do people really swim in that polluted water , I have heard of bathers getting skin infections that take ages to cure and if any of the water is ingested  you will spend 3 days in your bathroom or worse .

The authorities have a problem because beaches are the main attraction but the waters are inherently dangerous, I'm thinking rip currents; got caught in one once, very scary. 

Do the jelly fish sleep after dark  or are  they still around?

 I always wonder about things like sea snakes  and Jelly Fish and

other wonderful animals in the sea.

Me too , as well as rip tides and pollution . Have been told that red warning flags have on occasions  been lowered by the nearby vendors as they would not be getting customers .  Much safer in a well maintained swimming pool .

Many places prohibit swimming after dark, especially on beaches with dangerous and for one-time visitors unpredictable currents. And, I have seen such rule actively Policed, at a particularly popular and treacherous beach.
For enforcement, all that is needed is a few security staff; policemen; and / or life-guards every five hundred meters or so.. .. ..

Good luck with finding staff for that.  You would finish up paying a lot of people to sleep on the beach 55555
