Probe launched into 'tea money' allegation at famous Bangkok school

BANGKOK: -- Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) chief Karun Sakulpradit has ordered a probe into an allegation that the director of a famous public school on Bangkok's Rama VI Road had demanded Bt400,000 in “tea money” from a parent in exchange for the parent’s Mathayom 1 child being accepted into the school.

 

The parent recorded a video of him allegedly paying the money to the director, which went viral on social media. 

 

Karun said he had not received a formal report about this case but, upon reading news reports on it, he had assigned the director of the Secondary Educational Service Area Office 1 in Bangkok to set up a fact-finding committee to probe the case urgently. 

 

A Obec lawyer will join the probe, he added.

 

"If the fact-finding finds the information in the news was true, I will assign another committee to launch a probe into serious disciplinary action against the official in question,” Karun said.

 

“I'm very serious about this problem because Education Minister Teerakiat Jareonsettasin has always instructed that there must be no cases of tea money demanding in exchange for acceptance to schools.”

Paying for acceptance to a "famous" school.....nooooo,  really? Talk about cherry picking. Just had a student accepted to another 'famous school''. All her friends said she must have paid her way in, as her scores were lower than other better classmates who could not get it. This is rampant and is as common as paying a cop a bribe.

From my experience with Thai gf who was head teacher at a vocational school it seems as if their is more tea money floating around the school system than there is at the police stations. One example she described to me was western English teachers not having their contracts renewed so they could be replaced with Filipino teachers. The school directors would then receive healthy kickback commissions from the Filipino employment agencies. Gf was p!ssed because she was not on the distribution list.

I am not sure what the order wold be but it seems the top three of the public "service" institutions are:

Police and associated services

Education system

Customs and Excise.

 

Same in other countries...even in USA. Jared Kushner, (Pres.Trump's son-in-law)  was accepted into Harvard University despite his low GPA and SAT scores in 1998. This acceptance into the prestigious university occurred a few months after  Jared's father (rich real estate businessman) had donated $2.5 million to Harvard.  "Interesting" coincidence.

Corruption in every country, Thailand is one of many.

tea money?!!!...bribes?!!...corruption?!!!....shocking!!!...

 

such things do not exist in Thailand that has the most honest police force, the most honest immigration officers and the most honest land office government servants in the world!!!!!

very true...but in most western countries, you don't get ripped off by the friendly local trafic cops, land office or immigration officer on duty at customer desk....corruption on top levels during high profile public tenders etc exist worldwide but does not effect the common man's daily chores......

 

corruption at the bottom street/counter level is worse as it ruins the daily life of the commoners in petty dealings with governance!

Tea money must be a misnomer. You can get a hell of a lot of cups of tea for 400.000 baht.

Filipino,s speak American English not the same as U.K English.

Good point. You are referring to that form of bastardised English that has taken control of spell checkers.

 

I remember once reading a contribution in TVN on this topic that the best English speaking Filipinos go to work in the call centres. The leftovers get to work in countries like Thailand.

Every school. Every director. Every Govt dept. Corruption in Thailand is endemic. Thais actually hate it (except for those on the receiving end) but how can you stop something that starts at the top.

Very true. When i was teaching at an International school, the PI teachers were not allowed to teach English, because of the accent. My experience of visiting the PI was that they believed that everything was American. I had the worlds worst job trying to convince one woman that 'Rod Stewart' was not American.

Thai's love forming Committee's most who's recommendations and reports seem to be ignored !

I would be tempted to say enjoy the climate during the freezing european winters,

 

enjoy the great food, enjoy the water in the pool villas, the genuine or faked smiles all around

 

enjoy the fun in buying toys for the house at Home Pro, enjoy pushing the cart at Big C or Tesco,

 

have a fun chat with the laundry lady,

 

educate your young house maids not to put harsh chemicals in the loo that has a sceptic tank

 

and for those into deeper human relations, enjoy the meeow  and the booze and don't expect any better!...

 

and above all, keep yer mouths shut in public places  as big brother's golden angel wings are monitoring thou ole sayings!

Whoever it was that dealt with this bribe needs sorting out.

Such a job should be left to trustworthy educators who have enough sense to ensure that no recordings or videos are being made when managing money transfers!

Is there any hope that the Thai educational system will introduce ethics studies when those very same institutions are as totally corrupt as the administration, governments and Elites ?  I think not

Not an ideal moral example, to be sure, but I trust you cam discern the difference in rationalizing that the benefit to your other students of the endowment will outweigh the damage caused by having an undeserving numbskull in some of their classes. Not really the same thing as putting it into your back pocket (in your vacation pants at your holiday home on supposedly protected land somewhere)!

all that effort for a  diploma that is pretty much worthless outside of  Thailand, and   not much better here.

 

This education system is a massive iceberg

Having to pay 400,000 baht to get your child accepted into a school???  A village is short of two idiots!!

From the quality of the students it turns out, it appears all the positions/posts are inactive. Except when it comes to meting out corporal punishment and taking bribes.
