Alaska teen chased and killed by bear during running race

A "large black bear" has killed a 16-year-old boy who was participating in a popular trail running race in Alaska on Sunday, police say.

Patrick Cooper of Anchorage texted his family to say he was being chased by a bear while descending the extremely steep terrain.

The race director, who had been handing out awards, organised a search party of runners after he was shown the message.

Sad very sad, must have been a horrible way to die.

One thing that is disturbing about this, is he had time to text his family.

Surely it would have been better for him to run like hell and try to avoid the bear, than wasting time texting.

R.I.P. young man.

About 200 bear attacks a year there.....

Having been there you realize how this can happen....Lot's of bears & land - few people....They are fast, smart, protective, territorial, and fearless....

RIP young man.....

First time I went to Anchorage, my buddy took me to a park right in town and showed me where a jogger had been attacked just days before.  Instilled a respect for bears that I have never forgotten.

Apparently, pepper spray works on some, just pisses others off.

Condolences the the guy's family.

Old joke, and maybe tasteless, but....

2 guys out hiking come to a clearing in the woods.  A large bear sees them.  One guy jerks a pair of running shoes out of his backpack and quickly puts them on.  He friend says:

"What are you doing?  You can't outrun a bear!"

"Don't have to outrun the bear," the guy replies.  "Just you."

All you have to do is look around at all the anchored armour plated, double locking garbage cans everywhere as a reminder....

They've learned to open the single latch up button & button back locks (with their tongue & claws).....

And forget about locking your food away in your car...
