Border crossings for visa in Northern Thailand

Featured Replies

I have a Non Immigrant type O multi entry visa, and usually go to Mae Sai or Mae Sot to enter and return on the same day to activate my 90 days.

For a change of scenery, I wondered what other border crossings I could try, and whether I would need any additional information or visas to use them.

For example, If I go to Nong Khai, can I just walk over, have a look round and then return to Thailand as I would at Mae Sai?

Thanks for any Help.

Yes not a lot to look round unless you go to Vientiane for a look round. But yes out and in same day same hour same minute if you want. I walk out turn left walk round the corner and walk back in. 5 mins tops out and back in.

A crossing to Laos would require getting a Lao visa on arrival that costs $30 to $42 based upon your nationality. See: http://www.laos-guide-999.com/visa-on-arrival.html

The Chiang Kong crossing in Chiang Rai province to Laos would be an option if you are in the north of the country.

what is this walk in have a look around and come back don't you have to get a visa from another country ,or is there some crossing that you don't have to ? any info would be helpfull

thanks

The OP has a multiple entry non immigrant visa that allows 90 day entries for a year. He just needs to leave the country and come back. Same for a person that has a multiple entry tourist visa to get a new 60 day entry.

If from a country that qualifies for a visa exempt entry it is the same to get a new 30 day entry.

At some crossings a person from a country that qualifies for a 15 day visa on arrival can leave and re-enter to get one after applying for it and paying a fee.

Yes, you have to get a visa which is issued at the border. The visa lasts for 30 days. This is the case for both Laos and Cambodia.

Visas are only issued at Thai consulates, you are talking about a visa exempt stamp.

They're not talking about Thai visas.

You can go to Laos, get Laos visa on arrival, turn back, immediatelly go back to Thailand.

Basically anywhere. Nong Khai, Mukdahan... . Any border cross, that offers Laos visa on arrival.

I did it once in my life. And it was a little bit close though. Problem is, that Laos aplication form requires hotel adress, where you will be staying. And Laos officer insisted, that I fill it in. Otherwise no visa. I didn't think of that beforhand! Desperate times, desperate measures. So I had to come up with some hotel name. I wrote down something like "Bunglunxalay" (to me it sounds like Laos name for a hotel). But it immediatelly catched attention of officer! Because he never heard of such a hotel before. I had to swear to him, that it's real hotel. When I was 5 minutes later waiting for the bus back to Thailand I was literally praying, for that officer not come out of his both, and not see me waiting there. BTW Bus is crossing bridge every 30 minutes. I had no idea why, but at that time I had to wait 1 and half hour for that bus. :shock1:

They insisted on hotel details when I crossed to Savanahket a few months ago.  I gave the casino-hotel.  Best to look up one in the town you are crossing into and have it's name and address to put on the form, to avoid any issues on this point.

Went over two days ago hotel not needed

i know all about lao & cambo i have a non o and  have crossed these borders about 30 times in the last 12 years what i was asking is there any crossing that you don't have to, or can't get the visa for another country when you are doing an in -out on the same day

Just a bit further south to Ranong makes for a very popular and simple, simple border run. Can do the boat crossing or get a bit fancier with the boat crossing to the island with casino and hotel then back. Mediocre casino but simple crossing and no visas, just the usual crisp US$10.

For Myanmar you only need a border pass that costs $10 or 500 baht.

No visa is needed for Malaysia. People from most countries get a visa exempt entry.

I assumed you were asking about neighboring countries so I have not mentioned any that are further away.
