BANGKOK, 23 June 2017 (NNT) – The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has decided to find fault with Chonsawad Assawahaem for not following protocol in a contract between a private garbage collection business and Samut Prakan Municipal Authority as well as against authorities of the Revenue Department for embezzling funds from Value Added Tax.

NACC Secretary-General Sansern Poljiak revealed that strict punitive measures will be taken against Pahyu Suksodkhiew, a Revenue Department agent in the Samut Prakan 1 area, as well as 8 other individuals, some of which are not state agents. The group has been faulted with setting up a dummy export company to defraud 1 billion baht worth of value added tax from the state. Another 23 people have been found to have profited from the crime and are suspected of laundering the ill-gotten gains. The Anti-Money Laundering Office and the Department of Special Investigations have been asked to look into the additional issues.

The NACC has also decided to take disciplinary and criminal action against former Samut Prakan Municipal Mayor Chonsawad Assawahaem for allowing a 5 year exclusive contract worth 128 million baht be signed with a private garbage collection company, violating Ministry of Interior regulations against acquiring debt beyond 1 year.
