I just thought I would pass on what I have just found out about CMI. Thats the insurance that you pay when you pay the yearly tax etc for motorbike or car. I always presumed this insurance only covered life and limb for 3rd parties, passengers etc or someone you run into etc. It turns out that the insurance covers the you, the driver as well.

I had a bike accident on Monday and ended up in Bangkok Pattaya hospital getting bandaged up and some xrays etc. The admin staff kept asking if I wanted them to sort out the Motorbike insurance, I was saying I dont have any, presuming they were talking about a private policy. My wife turned up later and went about sorting out the insurance.

Its not much coverage, up to 30,000 Baht per accident, but enough to pay the bill at the hospital and a couple of follow up visits.

It was a pleasant surprise, and like myself, many are maybe unaware of it.

Yes that's nice to know, I have 1st class motorbike insurance, so now if I am involved in some accident, I can use the CMI if it is only minor, and only have to claim on my 1st class insurance if it is something not so minor.

I think you'll find the cover is 15,000 per person. Max two on a bike and you have 30,000. That certainly was the case when my mate, who was alone on the bike, and had a tumble on his scooter. Bangkok-Pattaya hospital "made" the bill up to just over 15,000. He paid the excess of just a few baht.

My wife had an accident (she was alone on the motorbike) several years ago and the max cover was indeed 15,000 THB then. I don't know whether or not it has increased since.

Doesn't help me a lot. Still confused. WHAT is the CTPL cover for motorcycles of varying c.c? Or are you saying a vehicle is a vehicle regardless of number of wheels and the premium is based ONLY on the c.c. of the vehicle which would make  a small car of 5 passengers have more insurance than a big bike of 2 passengers for the same price.

Understand the confusion but l don't want an accident to find out the real outcome.

CTPL cover for Versys 650 was 645 baht.

l have additional basic voluntary insurance as well which was 1700 baht bit extra cover bike damage up to 10,000 baht + 100,000 bail bond.

As l understand the CTPL covers the following :-

3rd party bodily injury: 50,000 baht per person.

3rd party death: 100,000 baht per person.

Maximum payout: 5,000,000 baht per occurrence.

Where's @stevenl  his knows a lot about insurance.

For a moment that sounds like a good idea; but if you need to go to Hospital, your bike probably also need some repair.
