Singaporean deported from Thailand for alleged murder almost 20 years ago

SINGAPORE: -- A Singaporean man has been deported from Thailand and charged in connection with the murder of an Indonesian almost 20 years ago, police said Saturday.

Teo Chwee Kow, 48, was "believed to be involved in the murder" of Edy Tan, 43, in a back alley of the city-state's Chinatown area on March 27, 1987, a police statement said.

He was deported from Thailand and arrested last Wednesday, then charged in court on Friday, the statement said.

It gave no further details but The Straits Times newspaper reported Saturday that Teo had been in custody in Thailand and was deported to Singapore after serving time in the kingdom.

The newspaper described the murder victim as a spare parts dealer.
