Shops urged to conform with New Tobacco Products Control Act

BANGKOK, 5 July 2017 (NNT) - The provincial public health department in Nong Khai and relevant units have organized a campaign to urge shops to conform with the new Tobacco Products Control Act that has now come into effect.

Staff from the department and relevant units on Tuesday visited shops where cigarettes are sold to inform them of the law. The staff found that shop managers cooperated well with the government by conforming with the act which prohibits them from selling cigarettes to people younger than 20 years of age. The law also prohibits people younger than 18 years of age from selling cigarettes including the selling of cigarettes by individual piece.

Meanwhile, Phra Ratchaworamuni, the ecclesiastical regional officer, said each temple can impose regulations for the enforcement of the law and suggested that they tell merit makers that cigarette smoking is prohibited at temples.

The new Tobacco Products Control Act bans advertisements of all types of tobacco products and prohibits tobacco businesses from organizing CSR activities to support individuals. Displays of tobacco products or cigarette packages at selling points where consumers or other members of the public can see them, are prohibited.
