2.Marob-in Make, a defense volunteer. He was gunned down in front of a mosque in tambon Sa Kam.

Defense volunteers and other Thai military collaborators are typical southern Thailand insurgent targets. And this one standing in front of a mosque - a sacrificial lamb by the authorities.

Another scum bag shooting fellow Thai citizens. I hope he is found and dealt with western style, hang em high.

Geezer

Surely more could be done to flush out what are probably Malaysian insurgents causing all of this trouble. It seems to get little attention from the big man and his army mates.

 Really?

If you think it is that easy try to remember that it as been going on for many decades under numberless governments, both civil and military.

As a comparison the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland went on for more than 70 years and are still going on today though not as obviously.

There is no easy answer or fix for something like this. If there was it would have been over decades ago.

I didn't say it was easy, where did you read that? All I'm saying is that it would seem that there could be more done. Also, that it hardly ever gets a mention from the current authorities who have vowed to clean up the whole country and make it sparkling clean.

The conflict could have been resolved decades ago.

But the Buddhist Kingdom of Thailand would have had to give up total sovereignty over the territory formerly ruled by the Islamic Kingdom of Pattani. That would have allowed the Muslim population to either operate as an autonomous state of Thailand or join the Federation of Malaysia. But the Thai military does not give up Thai sovereignty.

They're not.

Google the history of the Islamic Kingdom of Pattani. The insurgency has its roots in Thailand's forced annexation and integration of that Kingdom into the Buddhist Kingdom of Thailand.

The problem is that the Thais don't seem to have a special forces unit like the SAS in the UK who would move into an area and live in a hole in the ground for days and nights at a time in an ambush position.

Also the army don't seem to be getting enough good feedback from the locals to enable them to lay an ambush.

Ad the fact that the troops are still riding around on motorbikes and in un-armoured pick up trucks which makes them vulnerable and the terrorists know that the troops will be at certain places at certain times, protection for teachers, monks etc which also makes them a target.

Another larger problem is that are still using conscripts who are less well trained than regular troops and probably less aggressive in their tactics knowing that they are really cannon fodder.

The *only* solution to this problem involves high-level, direct-communication of a *political* (ie not a *military*) nature between (non-military) Thai Authorities and "Southern Representatives", leading to negotiations and to compromises regarding devolution of local powers and decisions.

 - Otherwise, deaths and injuries in this region will continue ad infinitum.

A major problem involves developing "trust" between the 2 parties, and another involves identifying "valid" Southern Representatives (ie people who have a mandate from the Southern Terrorists to speak/negotiate on their behalf).

This conflict must be dealt with "politically"  -  and not (only) "militarily".
