Veteran singer Thitima “Waen” Sutasunthorn has died of cancer at the age of 54.

She succumbed to a tumour at Siriraj Hospital on Friday afternoon after a five-year fight with different types of cancer. The singer was last admitted to hospital in early June.

Her untimely death was followed by messages of condolences through social media by friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry and her fans and admirers.

The bathing ceremony for her body is scheduled for 2pm on Monday at Thatthong Temple in the Ekkamai area.

The Abhidharma praying ceremony will be held from Monday to Friday, starting at 5pm. The cremation is scheduled for July 15 at the temple.

“Waen” was among the first group of singers who were signed by the giant music company GMM Grammy in 1984. She became widely known two years later when her song “Rao Mee Rao” (We Have Each Other) was released and it became a hit. More albums were released later and one of them sold almost 1 million cassettes.

A concert that was scheduled for Monday and intended as encouragement for Waen will go ahead as planned. It will involve almost 100 singers who will pay tribute by singing Thitima’s hit song “Rao Mee Rao”.

Thitima is survived by her husband, Banjerd Krissanayuth, and their daughter, Temfah Krissanayuth.
