Revenue Department to take serious action against fake tax invoices

 

 

BANGKOK, 19 July 2017 (NNT) – The Revenue Department is working to prosecute companies filing fraudulent tax invoices, reminding that the crime comes with a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and resolving to launch stringent action starting September. 

Revenue Department Director-General Prasong Poontaneat let on that accounting offices and firms across the nation, with emphasis on those that handle the country’s over 300,000 SMEs, have been notified that starting September 1 the department will be strictly taking action against companies that file fabricated tax invoices. In the past, the department did not seek criminal charges for the offense and only issued fines. 

Starting in September however, the department will seek criminal action in cases with as few as one fraudulent tax invoice, with each to entail a 7 year jail sentence with a maximum 20 years imprisonment possible. 

Under applicable law, fault will be found with both the filer of the fake invoice and its issuer and all those that supported the crime, including accountants. The shift up in punishment is to bring Thailand’s practices more in line with those observed globally. 

Accountancy firms that knowingly participate in the ruse will also be subject to punishment under accounting laws, which extend from jail terms to revocation of licenses.
