Stranded sea turtles give Phuket lifeguards an extra job in monsoon season

PHUKET: -- Members of the Phuket Lifeguard Service stationed at Nai Thon Beach yesterday (July 24) saved a turtle they found caught in a discarded fishing net.

 

But sadly they have also found other turtles this week that have not been so lucky.

 

Vitanya Chuayuan, Deputy Chief of the Phuket Lifeguard Service, told The Phuket Newstoday (July 25), “We found the turtle caught in the fishing net at Nai Thon Beach at 3pm yesterday afternoon. We cut the net and removed it from around the turtle. Luckily the turtle suffered no injuries and it swam back out to sea.

would be interesting to see what happens with the net after he takes if off the turtle. we have rescued a few in jomtien over the years. i prefer to burn the nets but it backfired on me when someone came forward and claimed they owned the nets. i was a bit more discrete about things after that. poor turtles are our front line of defense against the rise of jellyfish numbers and we are not doing them any favors.
