It does seem a bit ridiculous until I recall an expat former neighbor who had his car repoed because the money he was giving to his girlfriend for the car payment went to gambling instead.

My former neighbor's wife gambled their house away plus a bunch of money they didn't have playing cards in Ubon.

 

They were living in Pattaya on the lam from loan sharks.

 

I was working in Southern California & decided to check out Vegas one weekend.

 

I'm half decent at a poker game, as long as it's pocket change and nickel ante. My biggest haul ever was $15 USD.

 

I sat down & played video poker and lost $20 in about 10 minutes. That was the end my Vegas gambling.

 

I did NOT like the casinos at all, & found them to be loud, obnoxious places. Never went back and never plan to.

No Thais do not get a pass on gambling, a lady in our neighborhood has been busted at least 10 times for gambling along with her friends. She owned a massage and hair salon. When the police drove by and saw the doors shut and a lot of shoes in front it was time for a raid. Usually 2,000b and if they went to court dropped down to 1200b. They did arrest people just watching as a neighbor and her mom were both fined 2000b for being present.

 

Again Thais do not get a pass

Pathetic is about the only word to describe this.  I bet the wives of the cops do exactly the same thing whilst they are at work.  Talk about losing face, the BIB et al have very successfully done that.  Their senior officers should also be taken to task.  A complete and utter waste of resources and manpower.

FYI.  Just found out the game is gin rummy, but Thai's call it dummy...for some unknown reason.  They think it's funny.

In their defense, some are very good.  Some aren't.  Yes, perhaps most aren't....but there are some really good cops in Thailand.

The cards they had you can buy in any amount from the 7/11 and Family Mart. They are the official cards manufactured by the Thai government.

 

You are otherwise permitted to own two packs (and a few cards extra) of playing cards that do not have the stickers. But not import them unless you pay the customs charges. 

 

I would guess that somebody felt a bit left out of the fun and decided to ring the police. Once that happens they are obliged to act.

 

Normally nobody cares about these small games.

 

With the big games there is always an "influential person" or two somewhere behind the scenes.

I know one guy in Hua Hin who lost both house and car.
