What chance has police reform got when Thai people don't even know the meaning of the word!

'Police reform' means - 'total waste of energy'.

Now, now, Hong Kong and Singapore police forces once had similar problems as Thailand.  There is a smidgen of hope for Thailand, but the way things are now seems to favor the elite and connected in Thai society.  Should education become a high priority, things could change.  Even not allowing the purchase of senior positions would be a step in the right direction.

Police reform should start in-house to deal with corruption, but we all know this is not going to happen, as it seems to run from the top to the bottom,  next on the list should be should be lessons in law for all police officers because some seem to make it up as they go along , ie your motorcycle wheel touched the white line at the traffic lights, so you pay me 400b, Or telling you that you need an international licence, which seems to be a current one. PS if you are on a tourist visa you don't need an international license,  certain countries have reciprocal agreements with Thailand; UK, USA, and Australia are 3 of these.  https://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/thailand/transport/driving-licences.

Maybe if the salaries of police were increased it would help, but I doubt that it would make any difference at all because the shortfall would be too much to make up, and corruption seems to be ingrained.

Why does the Thai ppl not understand the word reform? Its not becos of accents or lack of education.

It is because nothing has ever been REFORMED in this country.

I first read this as Thai people don't know the meaning of the word "police"... and came up with: "your personal extortion specialist"

Anyone who has lived in Thailand for a long time will know that the largest organised criminal organisation in this country is the police force, and as such there can be no reform without the sacking of the entire establishment, including the upper management.

In any given population, one half of the population has less than average intelligence.  :shock1:  And according to statistical analysis, the average IQ quotient in Thailand 91 where 100 is average.  So intelligence in this country is skewed at below normal, which actually is pretty normal for third world countries.  So it shouldn't come to any surprise that a large segment of the population doesn't have the sophistication to understand the word 'reform' and its context.
And corruption is pretty well baked into the cultural hive mind.  What many of us in the West would consider abject 'corruption' is simply considered as 'social lubricant' here in the Land of Smiles and it pervades all levels of society.

This is a great news story.  I know that people in the North talk slower than people in Mid or

especially Southern Thailand, and some words spoken in the north have completely different

meaning in the South.  If you call someone a real stupid water buffalo in the Thai language

it can result a poke in your nose, or worse.  Just saying!

Geezer
