BANGKOK, 31 July 2017 (NNT) – The government spokesman has addressed concerns regarding the call to check the quality of stockpiled rice as the verdict of the rice pledging scheme case nears, asking the public to scrutinize the information available to them carefully.

Government spokesman Lt. Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd disclosed that some politicians and rice mill operators called on the government to check the quality of rice in the rice pledging scheme as the Supreme Court, Division of Criminal Cases of Political Office Holders will pass a verdict on the rice pledging scheme case.

Opinions are split in two, as some view it as a call for sympathy from society while others oppose it, he said.

The Ministry of Commerce’s Committee on Rice Policy and Management has already on several occasions clarified the principle of rice auction procedures, but certain individuals started to claim that premium quality rice is also mixed among the rice for auction, causing rice prices to plunge.

The people spreading these claims should be responsible for the reparations of the damage they caused to the price of rice and to the rice warehouses, said the government spokesman.

One question would be did a third party look at the rice and decide its quality or condition?
