90 Day Report to BKK by Post (EMS) - EMS reliability?

I'll post a very short report of my only attempt of 90 day reporting by post, even though it was more than five years ago.

Sent my details to my local immigration office (not BKK) by EMS, included stamps for return postage (not EMS) and all the correct documents.

I didn't receive anything back, even after more than a month. I had to go to immigration for another matter, so went to the 90 day desk as well to inform them I hadn't received the acknowledgement back in the post.

The girl on the desk, without looking at my passport, or asking any details, said that they hadn't received it!

I had tracked it on the postal tracking website and knew it had been listed as delivered. I showed the IO a copy of the EMS receipt and the tracking printout.

She said that she would need to see who signed for it, and we would have to go to the post office to find out. Luckily, my wife managed to phone the post office, who over the phone gave her the name of the recipient.

Five minutes later, went back to the 90 day desk, told the IO the name. She just looked disdainfully in the direction of another staff member saying, "Oh, that's her."

Without any further hassle she did my 90 day report for me, backdating it to the date on the tracking report.

No mention of any fine (not that there should have been anyway).

I'm sorry, I didn't write that too clearly. Yes, I did enclose a stamped envelope, as per the instructions.

I've done my 90 day report by mail in Bangkok for many years now. I always send it by EMS with a 10 baht return envelope. Never had an issue.

Why 10 baht?  That isn't even a postal rate.  The inland letter rates are 3 baht up to  20gm; 21gm to 100gm is 5 baht;  101gm to 250gm is 9 baht and 251gm to 500 gm is 15baht.   And those values are the vast majority of stamps that are printed. (Stamps, not sticky labels )

Because it is item 5 of the requirements.

Envelope with 10 Baht stamp affixed and return address of foreigner for the officer in charge to send back the lower part of form TM. 47 after having received the notification. This part must be kept for reference and for future notifications of staying over 90 days.

As Lopburi says, it's what is suggested in the Immigration instructions for 90 day mail-ins. That said, it does cause some confusion as they have to walk off behind the counter and hunt for the stamp. But they always find one.

Well it could be outdated information. As per the regulation I tried to get a 10 baht stamp, but my post office refused to sell me one, and insisted that a 3 baht stamp was plenty.  I also mail in ONLY the sheet with the barcode on it.  I include none of the other "required" forms, and successful every time (Jomtien Immigration)

The thread is about Bangkok Immigration and information on web site is what is required.  The reason for 10 baht postage is they do not know the amount of copies or weight that you will send and have to be returned.  It is very easy to obtain 2 five baht stamps in my experience.

I can only speak from my own experience.  I've done postal mail 5 times now,  each time a 3 baht stamp, and I mail in NO forms other than the (blue ?) sheet that has the barcode on it.  One time I did not receive the return letter, but when I went in the next time, the I.O. scanned the barcode again and said no problem.

As you clearly said in your earlier post - you were not using Bangkok.  This thread is about Bangkok.

  • 6 months later...

I just did my 90 day report at CW in person yesterday (I was up that way anyway.)  When asked, the IO gave me instructions in English about how to submit the 90 day report by mail, and I attached it below for those who need it.  It seems complete and well written.

2018.2.13 Instructions for 90 Day Report By Mail in English.pdf

Reporting by mail works well. I've used it for years.
