Bars, entertainment places and shops in Walking Street have been ordered to take down their neon advertising signs by the end of the month.

The order comes in a letter to all businesses in the famed South Pattaya street from deputy mayor Apichart Weerapan.

Bar owners are furious and say the move will have an adverse affect on their businesses.

They have appealed to the media to stop the move.

They have been told that many signs are illegal and represent a danger and are "obstacles".

Tnews reported that two years ago the Pattaya Authority were concerned about the inability of fire trucks to get down the road in the event of a fire.

Tnews reported there was broad agreement to move signs higher up.

They said that many tourists disagreed with the plans.

Tnews intimated that the authorities felt the signage was bad for the image of the resort causing concern for operators in the area who were worried that the move was about more than just fire truck access.

A few neon signs moved around won't end walking street. Far too much money being made there for the whole thing to die a death yet.

Far and away the most lucrative area of the city as is. Just some empty suit dishing silly orders around, nothing more

In a way, fair play.

But it is not as if the signs have been put up !

They have been there as long as the turds in the sea have !

Why cant the authorities face facts? Instead of trying to force the leopard to change its spots, why dont they just admit Pattaya is an adult entertainment venue and put their resources into cleaning up the beaches and making it safer for tourists to enjoy?

not sure I understand the thinking behind this but .................................everything on the beach side of walking street simply should not be there, if ever there was an encroachment in Thailand this has surely got to be the biggest ever, beach ? what beach....oh yes it used to run right along that coastline, they are all dumping their toilets and waste right there into pattaya bay

lets see the metal of Prayuth Chan "O" Chah, go ahead take on the Pattaya encroachment that everyone knows about and yet you ignore................do you have a business interest there ?

Fire trucks have had no problem getting down Walking Street in the past........

Like the fire-trucks do with parked vehicles in the USA, move them out of the way when need be!

Is an eyesore and only advertising prostitution.  It's  a step towards cleaning up Thailands seedy international reputation.  Still a long way to go before they can replace sex tourism with quality tourism.

Most noticeable one in the pic was King Seafood!

Never heard tourists described that way, but it's very accurate.

I think he means specifically the Chinese tourist's,, that travel in larger groups, and generally follow some one holding a flag,,,,

Try walking down any 'footpath' in Thailand without having to walk out onto the street. Walking Street. Obstacles. Really? Here's a tip. CLEAN UP THE BEACH. These guys.......'very smart' people .............

Obviously gearing up for the International marathon next month. Just a part of the big picture. Hua Hin is the future! Already the ferry is operational. High speed rail links to China. It's own airport.

37 years as I know it, it has thrived on NON QUALITY TOURISTS.  it started with the NON and will finish with the same,  quality tourists do not come to Pattaya long term as the beach and sea are filthy.  Longer term holidays are mostly the sex ---or want to see it---type  they bring in the money, feed it to the boys and girls who send it up to Mama via the post office,  quality tourists  are quick sight see-ers  only.
