snoop1130
Embarrassing fall for cellphone user By Phuket Gazette A 26-year-old woman has fallen into a drain while out walking because she was checking her mobile phone and did not pay attention to where she was going. The accident happened at the front of Muang Thai Leasing Office in Chao-fah East Road. Rescue workers arrived to find the woman sitting on the drain lid with her right leg firmly stuck in it. They had to smash out some of the surrounding concrete to pull her leg out. The woman, who refused to reveal her name, was taken to Vachira Hospital with minor injuries. A Kusoldharm Foundation volunteer says pedestrians needed to take care while walking around Phuket as many footpaths had holes and other obstacles. Kinnock
Well using her cell phone was part of the problem - the open drain being the other part.
LivinginKata
'A Kusoldharm Foundation volunteer says pedestrians needed to take care while walking around Phuket as many footpaths had holes and other obstacles.' And there lies the real problem, smart phone use is just an excuse. Years before smart phones were popular i had a friend fall into an open sewer along the walk way. He had open cuts that became badly infected. He spent a lot on medical bills.

WhizBang
Only minor injuries? She is damn lucky. I make a point to avoid walking on drain guards, etc. Far too many in a very bad state of disrepair.

Retiredandhappyhere
Yes, of course people should pay attention to where they are walking, but surely they are entitled to expect that there should not be holes in the pavements, live hanging electric cables or sharp metal signs at head-height blocking their path? It is so easy to blame the victims in these cases but the main responsibility must rest with the authorities concerned, even in the non-nanny state of Thailand? Not blaming the authorities merely ensures that their non-caring attitude for the safety of their citizens will continue, in the same way as not complaining about any bad service in the service and tourist industries ensures that nothing will be done to improve things.
