Thais tell Facebook: “This is Thailand – you’re not doing enough to block illegal content”

This blows my mind on a regular basis about my wife.  I'm all for respecting ones culture, but she can't seem to grasp the fact that I have my own culture that shaped me and I'm not going to abandon it.

It's ethnocentrism taken to the extreme, i.e., the belief that the Thai way is the only way and the best way.

I wonder if this mindset is due to general ignorance re: the world beyond the borders of Thailand or hubris or some combination of both?

Posters, please read the headline carefully. The Thais it refers to is simply The National Broadcasting Authority, absolutely nothing to do with the Thai population.

just a reminder that facebook is on tor to prevent governments from blocking it. most people dont know how to use it but Im sure Thais would learn quick if the government did try to block it, and when they learn how to do that they will also be able to get around all government censorship on the internet, so probably not a good move for the government to try and block facebook

Just use a VPN and it's unblocked. Thais are not that stupid.

Is Thailand saying to the world they control the internet and will tell the world what they can watch or in this case what they cannot watch?

it would be easy for the world to say up yours and that would be it tourists gone business gone and poverty all around.

If that happens the hiso yellows and co would also leave so maybe a good way out for all concerned.

Who dreams up this crap that even facebook laughs at them, but its given me a big money making idea

Facebook tells  Thais you aren't the centre of the universe.

Id  like them to  pull out and see the chaos.

Thailand is putting on their big boy pants.

Diapers I'd  say:passifier:

I'd be surprised if the govt. don't  launch "Thaibook" of course  like the immigration website it may not perform as expected, or even at all.

FB has the ability to decimate your tourist industry.

Try not trying to shoving your culture down everyone's throat.

Can I change a little please?

try

Do not try shoving your draconian outdated culture down everyone's throat, come and join us in the 21st century, its much nicer that the 15th

Sorry having the ministry of digitalis at work websites cannot be made that work on all devices

Me thinks the Jaunta boys would be back playing in the rice fields in a matter of weeks . I don't know any Thais that don't use Facebook . They could try to stop it like North Korea, but shooting people in the streets , probably wouldn't go down too well.

Why did you marry someone that doesn't respect/acknowledge who your are?

Just a reminder that Thailand's current communication law forbids the use of proxy servers to circumvent the blocking of websites by Thai authorities.

If the junta wanted to send a clear message, it could have blocked Facebook and made VPN's illegal, but it didn't so really their ranting and raving has no value.

While VPN's are legal to use in Thailand, it is illegal to use one to circumvent the blocking of websites by Thai authorities.

The law has only value if you enforce it.

If Thailand banned Facebook then you would most certainly see the laws surrounding the use of VPN's being enforced extremely quickly.

By the way, just as a side, the UK government efforts in April 2011 to sensor Facebook were way worse than that of Thailands, strange how Facebook kissed the UK governments feet back then but seems to not be budging here.

Yeah it is strange given the population numbers are about the same.

Don't know about him but in my case it was because she was pregnant.

Did you mean this

UK

In the United Kingdom on April 28, 2011, the day before the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, a number of politically motivated Facebook groups and pages were removed or suspended from the website as part of a nationwide crackdown on political activity. The groups and pages were mostly concerned with opposition to government spending cuts, and many were used to organize demonstrations in a continuation of the 2010 UK student protests. The censorship of the pages coincided with a series of pre-emptive arrests of known activists.  Amongst the arrestees were a street theater group planning an effigy beheading performance in opposition to the monarchy.[30]

A Facebook spokesman said the pages were disabled as part of a routine sweep because they were created with fake personal profiles, a violation of the company’s term of service. In this case a number of the Facebook personal profile pages represented causes, rather than real people. Facebook "offered to help convert the profiles to pages that are designed to represent companies, groups or causes.] The spokesman went on to say that "the Met Police did not ask Facebook to take down this content

Yes.

Thais use fake names on Facebook.  Well most of them anyway
