Inquest finds former land official “murdered” while in custody

The Criminal Court today (Aug 4) ruled that the death of Thawatchai Anukul, a former Phangnga land official, in the custody of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) last year, was murder.

The inquest ruling by the court that Thawatchai, 66, did not hang himself as earlier claimed by DSI officials raised hope for his brother, Chainarong Anukul, to pursue the case now handled by Thung Song Hong police in Bangkok and bring the perpetrators to justices.

Mr Chainarong said after hearing the court ruling that he would consult his lawyer to consider further action with responsible officials.

Jail ‘self-hanging’ a killing: Court

n1.jpeg

The Criminal Court on Friday ruled that a former land official who died last year while in custody of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) was killed.

Tawatchai Anukul, a former official wanted for illegally registering land deeds for about 1,000 plots in Phuket and Phang-Nga, made headlines last year when he was found dead while being detained by DSI in August last year.

At the time, it was said that Tawatchai hanged himself. The court, however, has ruled that there is no evidence about who killed Tawatchai during his detention.

DSI officials earlier said Tawatchai had hanged himself by attaching a sock to his detention room door.

His death occurred just one day after he was arrested for wrongfully exercising his duties as an official of the Provincial Land Department.

this ruling now puts others in doubt

Omg, could I dare to say justice is turning a new corner.

Now let's see if the investigation hits a wall.

Well done courts.

It will be a long road, with many obstacles before any justice is seen to be done,if ever,

the man obviously knew too much,so he had to be silenced,in case he spilled the beans,

regards Worgeordie

I would say, this would not be the only hanging in the jail cell that is not a suicide.

Of course they are suicide, all carefully investigated by the the unbiased perpetrators.

Shocking! Who would have thought that ?

Thai justice will always remain in the slow lane. A year to work out that someone (hereafter referred to as the killer) helped him hang himself with his sock. Expect another 10 years or more for "justice" to find the guilty party "not guilty".

how many like this one happened many times. Did you forget the famous fortune teller who died in military custody. They always kill themselves in police or military custody.

Dare I suggest that it suited the US and certain members of the local constsbulary that the founder of the dark web met a similar end?.

Why does the junta always get dragged up in these threads about crap that's been going on for decades before this particular coup?

You may also want to point out that the junta is calling this a murder and not a suicide.  But that's just as misleading.

It is well known the Junta is fair and open to criticism, was never involved in any suspiscious case and the fact that the Junta call this a murder AFTER the investigation is quite fun...the Junta is dragged in those topics because it is the current government...the fact that it happened previously does not contradict my thoughts...Au contraire mon cher!

Absolutely no question.....hung by a towel?.....

"DSI officials earlier said Tawatchai had hanged himself by attaching a sock to his detention room door. "

What size were his feet!  The picture shows him wearing short socks, so unless somebody gave him some extra long socks (About 1 metre long should be enough) whilst in detention, it's highly unlikely he could hang himself.

Am I missing something here?

The only sock of that size would normally have Christmas presents in it!

these are both stupid and Bad folks; awful mix; now the police cant even kill people properly

Not enough evidence will be found.... it will merely become another page in the book of Thai underworld murders.

I thought similar. That was beyond weird.

Let me guess: It will be found that somehow, every surveillance camera was somehow malfunctioning and the surveillance Hard drive disappeared.

illegally registering land deeds for about 1,000 plots in Phuket and Phang-Nga,
That is big dark business.
There must be necessarily on the other side 1000 profiteers, which must have paid bribes.
A huge stinking dunghill.
Businesses in this dimension the land official did not make alone.
Behind it, there are certainly some powerful masterminds high up.
He is probably only the sacrificed peasant in the great chess game about money and land titles.

Well, if you're gonna go with "he hanged himself with a sock" then you gotta expect some kinda backlash. Even for Thailand.

There are some cases we shouldn't talk about

ssshhh; dont worry; will blow over; just another one

If you recalculate, it will be interesting.
1000 x 1 Million per Rai is = 1 Billion Baht
But the Rai in Phuket is not so cheap anymore.
Also, the report does not mention the total size of the 1000 plots.
The whole is with high probability in the double-digit Billions, maybe around the submarine area.

Well spotted could not make a noose out of them even if your where DSI

A persons life means nothing to some.

Nice trainers. Plenty of laces in them too.

There will be a lot of shafted land purchaser's that are now a little happier.

We know he was murdered BUT there is no evidence as to the perpetrators. Extrajudicial killing..no justice here. Case closed.

does Thailand ever perform atopisies in the kingdom? i ask this question as all suspicious deaths are atopisyed in the west.
