BANGKOK, 4 August 2017 (NNT) – Ten provinces in the northeastern and central regions are still suffering from floods, with over 200,000 households affected.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) said since July 5 this year, a total of 44 provinces in Thailand have been impacted by flooding. However, the situation has returned to normal in 34 provinces while the other ten remain inundated with water.

The ten flooded areas consist of the northeastern provinces of Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Nakhon Phanom, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Nong Khai and Ubon Ratchathani and the central province of Ayutthaya. As many as 247,512 families, equivalent to over 800,000 residents, are currently affected.

The DDPM is working with provincial administrations, military units and relevant agencies to expedite the delivery of assistance to the flood victims. Heavy machinery is being deployed to facilitate the drainage of excess water in the hope of restoring normalcy as soon as possible.

In the meantime, the Meteorological Department has forecast increased precipitation in the upper parts of Thailand as well as scattered showers in the East, the Central Plains including Bangkok and its vicinity, and on the Andaman coast of the South. In this regard, residents are encouraged to beware of rain-induced disasters. As for Typhoon Noru, the department confirmed it is heading towards Japan and will have no impact on Thailand.
