Gas hob fails to light-thermocouple?

Recommended Posts

I have a Mex gas hob but its a typical scenario; to ignite the gas you press down the knob and turn and hold a few seconds then release.

one ring is great, it lights in less than 2 seconds

our other was always a little bit slow but is getting worse and now i am holding down for 30 seconds and it still cuts off.

I am no gas engineer but i know that hobs have built in thermocouples as a safety device and i am assuming the small vertical black peg opposite the ignition peg is the thermocouple.

it has an electic wire to it maybe 10mm high.

All my gas burner holes are clear so do i have a faulty thermocouple and where does one get a replacement if thats my prom-prem?

Did you check the battery?  Unless both burners use the same battery.

the battery feeds both burners, but i reckon thats gonna go so as I have  spent about a years worth of "clicks" to get the faulty one going.

the battery as I recall is a size i dont think I have ever seen before..similar the old SP11 torch batteries from the 70s

There are places that fix them. Usually they sell propane and have a shop full of cookers (hobs). just look around.

Thats a great idea, as I would never be able to match the part to a Lazada website.

thanks

We also have a Mex hob, and it uses a standard D size battery. If you haven't done so already, I would definitely start out by getting a new battery. We recently changed ours (after about two years of use), and went from click ----------- click ----------- click to click-click-click-click and instant ignition.

There is usually one of the holes in the burner that aims directly at the thermocouple. Maybe the hole is plugged or the thermocouple is slightly out of alignment?

If you are handy you could switch the thermocouple to the other-side to verify.

If all else fails send me a PM

All four burners on my Technogas free standing stove/oven failed years ago due to varmints dining on the wiring.  I tried to find parts but they weren't available in Thailand, so I bought a 20 baht "log lighter" and have been using one ever since. I keep it on the counter next to the stove.  It doesn't even have to light, the spark is enough.

I dont have a problem with the ignitor/battery, and I shouldnt have the hobs only 8 months old. I do prefer the lighter gun tho if ever the battery fails.

I was at Global today and i was just looking at another display hob.

"Expert" comes along so I attempt to discuss with him. I know the white ceramic stick is the ignitor and the black one is the thermocouple., but he just kept saying safety safety. I kept saying thermo-couple..... he tootles off and comes back with gun lighter as the answer to my problem......I then place my fingers on the  controls and say "knob; knob head"

oh dear.

yes those varmints are.........what exactly are varmints?

Let me guess? :whistling:   Rats   They love insulation on wires.

In my case, field mice!  I live in farm country and we get a yearly infestation during a few months of the year and, yes, VN, they love insulation on wiring.

One of two burners hasn't worked properly for a while, so we only use one burner until I get round to fixing the faulty one.

The faulty one does eventually light, but doesn't burn properly. I've tried to buy new gas jets but not successful (maybe have to try harder).

So if it is the thermocouple, I just disconnect the wiring and use a gun, that's if I can't get a new thermocouple.

I didn't disconnect anything, the varmints did it for me. If you just  turn the burner on and use the lighter it should lite without disconnecting anything.

Sounds daft but have you removed the jet and cleaned it. Maybe a soak in petrol of lighter fluid or... Hold it up to the light etc.. Use some old piece of de-braided wire to poke through...

I really haven't tackled this problem full time. I removed a jet and thought it would be easiest to just replace the 3. Wrong, no have. So will look at cleaning etc.

Thanks

Cleaned the jets, but gas won't come on until the the thing is striking, so gun no good.

Must be the thermocouple as it lights but won't stay on.

Been like it for 3 odd years already, so I suppose another week or two won't matter.

Another thought? Does the control valve have anything on it with a screwdriver slot in it. Like say a pilot adjustment screw?

If you have a multi-meter you can measure the thermocouple output voltage.

thats probably what Global expert was telling me to do....unscrew it and use an ignitor.

question then: the thermocouple is a safety feature though i dont see what its doing.

if we already have the safety cut out on the gas bottle regulator does that mean the thermocouples are really for direct gas supplies.

LPG tanks are available everywhere.  Just call your local dealer for delivery.
