PHUKET: -- Following the tour bus crash on Patong Hill on Sunday night that wiped out several vehicles, including a tuk-tuk carrying tourists, and left dozens of people injured, the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) has “invited” tour buses registered in other provinces to have their brakes checked.

The “invitation” came yesterday (Aug 8) in a formal announcement issued by the PLTO.

The announcement followed Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong ordering a raft of safety measures to prevent further devastating accidents on the steep hill road after personally inspecting the crash site with PLTO Chief Banyat Kantha on Monday (Aug 7).

Invited ??  Typical Thainess.

And how practical is this with a bus coming into Phuket with a load of passengers.  I suppose they could check at the island entry check point - plenty space there.

they want to check the quality of the pads/shoes being fitted also, being Thailand my guess is they are not fitting quality parts instead choosing cheap poor quality product from China which are all but useless when they heat up, also the brake fluid being used

They still don't get it,they need to use their gears to slow down on hills, not the brakes,

better if they put signs up, use low gear, but really think it would be waste of time,as

the drivers will think they know better, and so it goes on.

Large buses don't use brake fluid by the way. They have air brakes... But the drivers over use their brakes too much on the downhill and brake fade occurs from the over heating the drums and shoes.

So Phuket registered busses are exemplary in their maintenance of bakes (and driving skills)?

yeah thx for that - should have known that, but regardless I still say the materials in the shoes is very likely substandard and cheap, also the drivers are likely in such a hurry they are not using low gears as it just slows them to a crawl, I think there are a mixture of issues going on

- poor quality parts

- poor maintenance

- poor training

- and a serious lack of enforcement of all the above

ultimately it boils down to one thing

Thailand being 3rd world when they think they are not, reality hurts, the facts and statistics are there, denial is what Thailand does pretty much about everything

I see a lot of these coaches as old rejects from other country's stricter controls. Especially the ones with Chinese tours - very old, belching smoke (bad injectors ?), no power up hils, no brakes downhill.
