rooster59
District chief on the move again armed with stickers - but was that a machine gun? Image: Siamchon News Bang Lamung district chief went to Walking Street in South Pattaya to check up on drugs, human trafficking and weapons in the area's Go-Go bars. While the main aim of the exercise seemed to be to put warning stickers outside each entertainment venue Thaivisa were left wondering if one of the 20 strong raiding party of police and interior ministry officials had a machine gun. Naris Niramaiwong has been busting illegal aspects of the sex trade and gambling in the resort for much of this year, with mixed success. On Wednesday he turned his attention to Walking Street where ten bars were inspected. Thai female workers' ID was checked and urine tests were done. A total of seven people were found not to have their ID with them but no drugs were found. This was a carbon copy of the number of places raided, and the results achieved in Sri Racha karaoke lounges last week. Stickers were stuck out front of the Walking Street bars; they say that the establishment is a weapons and drugs free zone and call for an end to human trafficking. People can be fined up to 1.2 million baht and jailed for up to 12 years for human trafficking. The expression has become the buzzword of the last year or so after US authorities urged the Thais to crackdown on the trade. Naris said it had been a successful evening. "We are doing this to rid Thailand of human trafficking," he said. "Everything was fine tonight but the checks will go on continually according to the Ministry of the Interior and Department of Local Administration policy". The Siamchon report made no reference to what was hanging around the neck of one member of the raiding party. WinnieTheKhwai
What exactly is human trafficking, as it relates to Thai pubs and bars? Honestly if people understood what it is then they could help.. with.. .. whatever that is. If you hire a 17 year old who herself got on a Rung Ruang bus to Pattaya, are you now guilty of trafficking? Why actually does age matter when it comes to 'trafficking'? And does the line of work matter? And does it matter if the person is Thai or not? I really wish I understood the offense.. I hear it all the time. But.. what is it? smedly
I would love to ask the district chief what exactly he thinks goes on in gogo bars, seriously I would love to hear his answer and all these raids going on by the new district chief, why, I know the answer but I want him to say why and I also want him to explain it to Prayut Chan O Cha, then I want the PM to closely monitor his bank accounts as all police should be totally transparent and answerable to the public oh never mind
WinnieTheKhwai
I think I'm a victim of trafficking. And so is the district chief and almost everyone else. -------- Anti-Trafficking Persons Act B.E 2551 (2008) Whoever, for the purpose of exploitation, does any of the following acts: procuring, buying, selling, vending, bringing from or sending to, detaining or confining, harboring, or receiving any person, by means of the threat or use of force, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power, or of the giving money or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person in allowing the offender to exploit the person under his control; or procuring, buying, selling, vending, bringing from or sending to, detaining or confining, harboring, or receiving a child; is guilty of trafficking in persons. “Exploitation” means seeking benefits from the prostitution, production or distribution of pornographic materials, other forms of sexual exploitation, slavery, causing another person to be a beggar, forced labour or service, coerced removal of organs for the purpose of trade, or any other similar practices resulting in forced extortion, regardless of such person’s consent. ------------ "Forced labour or service, regardless of consent.".. Wot? If you consent to something, how is it forced? So, yeah, distribute stickers about something that nobody understands. impulse
If the local officials feel the need to have a machine gun toting bodyguard to safely visit the area, I'm not sure that's a good sign. On several levels. Edit: But tomorrow we're going to read that the guy was called in to work on his way home from the paintball arena, and didn't want to leave the paintball gun on his scooter... binjalin
Some who 'was familiar with the matter' told me there were serious concerns from the Katoy section of the Pattaya 'community' and that threats of a handbag attack had been made, and taken seriously, by the authorities. So part of their 'outreach strategy' included a machine gun to repel any such subversion.

yellowboat
They should go around the bars to make sure that the people working there are of legal age, but a machine gun is out of place for such a thing.

Dave67
If DC is looking for Human traffickers then the DC should go and look at camps near army bases on Myanmar and Malaysian border. Of course, the Army would know the camps were nearby

So basically you are saying that most of the cities in Europe are not safe for tourists because of the armed police on the streets. Yet because Thailand does NOT have armed police groups at the airports it is not a s safe as Europe. Really? 29 minutes ago, Thian said: Also in Malaysia, Singapore, Tokyo i saw heavy armed security in every public space at the airports... Only Swampy doesn't need them it seems. They are at every airport in the UK, and most big towns and cities in the UK have at least one armed police response support vehicle out 24/7. The bigger the city the more groups that are out. My understanding of human trafficking is based on what was happening (and is still happening) a few years ago. Thinking of woman (usually) lured into non existent job , having their passport taken from them and then being forced to have sex to repay any debt owed for airfares or whatever for an extended period as the debt grow larger until they have no way out. Slavery basically. Very common in Europe I believe. These days the term is so widely bandied about that just about anything can be termed human trafficking when in a lot of cases it is not, but the evil connotation is still there in peoples minds. It suits the lefty do-gooders agenda to encourage the watering down of the meaning behind the terminology. Bit like being called a racist because I don't like female Islamic garb, or a sexist because I say a lady is attractive, neither of which are racist or sexist. calexapic
The consent part in legislation refers to the problem faced when slaves are interviewed... they nearly always say they are there willingly. So frightened and institutionalised they have become. Often illegal immigrants who feel they can only rely on their master. It means the police can investigate further despite them saying this eg do they have hold and access to their own docs? Do they have any money, do they know their address phone number etc. Well that's as I understand it in the UK where trafficking and modern slavery are shamedly a big problem.
