Hi

Im the father of a Thai/British 8 year old child, he was born in Thailand but currently lives with me in the UK.

Wondering if i was to take him to Thailand for a few years schooling, and put him in private school would it be viable for me to get a visa so i could stay a 3/4 years.

Or would it be a hassle every year and the decision would be made according to if the official got out of bed on the right side?

Same process as any other long term visa.
No better no worse. As long as u have all the right paperwork then no reason not to get it based on being father of Thai national.

Sounds like you need an extension of stay based on being a parent.

The ins and outs of that are along the lines of:

Proof of paternity (translation docs required too)

Proof of funds in a Thai bank account - 400k THB

From what I have read fathers who have been through this process leave the cash in the bank untouched and I believe the process is simpler after the first year and if I'm not mistaken they report once a year?

I wish I could provide more info but my local immigration office where I must process my 1st EOS as a parent has been flooded. It's 90km away so my plans are on hold until the weather gets more stable.

Thanks so it is feasible, im not in Thailand at present as i say.

My worry is after a couple of years they move the goalposts and it interferes with kids education.

I'm not with the mother either if that makes a difference.

Follow the advice of @ubonjoe when he chines in on this subject.

I assume you are named as the father of the child on his Thai birth certificate. That is usually sufficient to get a multiple entry Non O visa to "visit" your Thai child. However, the visa alone only allows 90-day visits to Thailand. You actually want one-year extensions of the permission to stay. For that, just being named as the father on the birth certificate is not necessarily sufficient. You need to be "legitimized" as the father. That occurs automatically if you were married to the mother at the time of the birth. Otherwise, there is a (not too complex) legal process that must be gone through. Apart from applying for extensions of stay, that could also be important if, having come to Thailand, you and your son want to make overseas trips. You can be prevented from leaving with your son.

I would not worry much about the possibility of the Thai authorities moving the goalposts (except possibly financial proof) for you to stay in Thailand with your son. The Thais take breaking up families pretty seriously, unlike in certain "civilized" countries.

Be prepared for a bit of a shock when you find out how much attendance at a good international school for your son is going to set you back!

You should get a Thai passport for your son so he can enter as a Thai rather than a Brit. You should get a single entry non immigrant 'O' visa as his parent. Once in Thailand, after about 45/60 days you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay, which is easily renewed each year. You will need to be the legal parent with custody of the child to apply. You need an income (certified) of at least 40K baht per month or have at least 400K baht in the bank on the day you apply.

Try to avoid your son entering as a Brit and basing your permit to stay on his schooling.

Not all no, but the three biggies are very similar.
Retirement, spouse and parent of thai.
The only real difference is the money requirements.
