webfact
PM stresses Govt's determination to combat narcotic drugs BANGKOK, 28 August 2017, (NNT) - According to the Government Spokesperson, the Prime Minister and his administration are determined to eliminate the narcotics issue. Government spokesperson and Public Relations Department chief Lt-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said today that Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has stated that the government has made eradicating the narcotics problem a national issue, showing the administration’s commitment to terminating the issue. He announced that the Prime Minister has advised that the public health sector will now focus on caring for substance abusers by taking human rights into account and giving them guidance in living peacefully in society. General Prayut talked about the civil-state plan to establish anti-narcotics communities, while combining efforts to deal with drug traffickers, producers and networks. Lt-General Sansern disclosed that the Prime Minister mentioned the amendment of related laws, and consolidating them into a single law that can be enforced effectively. He said that the government is implementing the teachings of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in approaching the issues concerning drugs and social inequality. The spokesperson also indicated that various foreign governments in countries such as Myanmar, Afghanistan and Indonesia have put these teachings into action, after observing one of His Majesty the late King’s famous projects, the Doi Tung Development Project. Lt. General Sansern urged all sections of society to contribute to the fight against narcotics by abstaining from drugs in any form, and informing officials about the issue whenever they come across evidence of the problem. -- nnt 2017-08-
piersbeckett
To be effective the powerful and the very rich need to cease stressing and approaching in favour of doing something meaningful or their efforts tend to present as merely show. Evidence strongly suggests that the war on drugs, made, sold and taken for recreational use is unwinnable but palliative care and pain relief could be vastly improved by the proper prescribing of opiates. I doubt the powerful and the very rich go without it when it's needed. Edited August 28, 2017 by piersbeckett

longtom
Another topic where he wants to turn back the wheel 30/40 years. Military folks can be extremely resistant to any positive change, trying to keep everybody in the dark ages (singer's twerking, internet in general ...). connda
Why do they continue down the 'war on drugs' path when history has shown it to be a fruitless venture other than incarcerating a whole lot of your population. The can huff, and puff, and moralize, and threaten ... but history simply says that the eradication simply isn't going to happen. So why not focus of decriminalizing, providing medical treatment to addicts, and work on education. And not just Thailand. Everywhere. Of course, if you really want to put teeth in the "No Drug" policy - make nicotine and alcohol illegal too.

lvr181
"...the Prime Minister and his administration are determined to eliminate the narcotics issue. " A noble thought but how about putting a truly better effort into eliminating 'official' corruption? That would be beneficial for EVERYONE in Thailand!! Drug use (like prostitution) will always be there - you will never eliminate but learn to control! Help the drug users deal with their problems - many different approaches can be used, including education -but eliminate (starve them of oxygen) the traffickers and their "bosses"!! The users are merely the fruit on the whole rotten tree. You have to cut down the tree Stop with the skirting around problems (whatever they may be) and learn to deal with the core/fundamental issues! Try using some high order critical thinking for a change.
