Thais flocking to invest as "Balihai Market" promises to transform South Pattaya

Thais online have responded in large numbers to proposals to create a thriving market area at the Balihai development in South Pattaya.

 

Following a request for investors many Thais went on Facebook to say they were interested in setting up stalls and restaurants in the shadow of the famous Pattaya sign.

 

The market will be part of the marina set to open in November.

 

The area promises to have restaurants, souvenir shops, snack food stalls, bars selling alcohol, fashion items and handmade products.

 

An online appeal showed impressions of the area that is being referred to as a new landmark of the resort.

And it will all look like poorly maintained slum after 6 Months.. New tenants will add plastic hordings, home made extensions and awnings. Stacked up stock and abandoned packing boxes will block the walkway. They will paint their shop in garish uncoordinated colours. Did I mention the badly parked scooters and soi dogs sleeping everywhere ?

Used to be a nice walk to to the lighthouse and then up the hill. The stretch is an absolute disgrace now.

Sounds to me like this road needs to be buzzing for the Junta's dog and pony show on the water in Nov.. After that, WGAF.

Outdoor market at Bali Hai would be very nice place to hang out. Pattaya needs more spaces like this, people love them. Even crammed, small spaces are loved by everyone, outside Central the steps are always busy, both locals and foreigners sit around. Beach Rd used to be a good place to spend time just sitting and people watching, but they took away the benches. Still, small areas with seating on Beach Rd are still very, very popular, the round benches near Walking St entrance and opposite of Central are always busy, even the wood fenced spots on Beach Rd walkway attract people, even tho sitting on the wood fence isn't very comfortable.. Steps outside Royal Garden always packed with people. But there just ins't enough of those spaces in Pattaya to just hang out .

For people who do not like bars, there is almost no place to hang out, few coffee shop terraces are the only option, Starbucks on Beach Rd and Coffee Bean outside Mike's.

Yes, I agree a nicely themed "cafe strip" would be great. Out door seating, nice umbrellas or shade sails, Relaxing music, food and drinks. Could be a great money spinner and attraction. Dozens of similar locations around the World to take inspiration from.

But..

The problem is the the inevitable result in Thailand. Shoddy work, poor attention to detail, low quality materials and zero maintenance.  It doesn' t matter what they build it will just rot away and corrode. Neither owners or tenants seem to be able to cooperate or establish simple rules to follow. Even in Bangkok they seem to struggle with quality construction and upkeep. Witness the mishmash of mess around Maprachan reservoir. It could of had a boardwalk, cafes, gardens and plenty of areas to sit and socialise. Instead it's just a mess. No civic planning or control. Chaos.

Haven't been there lately, but has there been any improvement in the marine, last I have seen was that all the jetties were laying upside down in the water

Totally agree.  The whole area is an unattractive mess right now with too many tour buses blocking traffic and parking everywhere, leaving trash all over the streets and parking areas.  Take a look at the street behind Manita Hotel and the empty lot next door for examples.  The pier area and the surroundings really need a comprehensive design that goes far beyond what is being proposed.

Well, full marks for originality. These sorts of facilities are very hard to find here and are really only available in every single street in Pattaya.

What happened to a public land for public use.  

 

This is disgusting giving/selling the land to private investors.  ( what will happen to the money that is received what will it go towards, Sewage treatment plants?)  I thought it was promising that the land was being taken back and cleaned up?  What happened to the speed boat operators mafia? You took down all the businesses that were there for illegal construction but left the eye sore tower of epic proportions of corruption to degrade into the skyline.  Every great city, even one that touts to be family orientated beach resorts need public space so make it public space not for commercial use.   

 

Everyone knows that this will just become an extension of beach road for solicitation of every thing not related to family fun.  Pattaya if you think that the marine environment is a public toilet and waste pit, please continue commercializing public land to private investors.  

 

Look there's a nice park in Jomtien just built for family, why not replicate that by ten, reach out further, skate board park, basket ball court, football pitch, Badminton, the possibilities are endless for benefit of society and all of Pattaya.   You want to make an impression to the world, start by reaching out to the community.   You know if you moved city hall to the east side of Pattaya and the police station on Soi 9 over there, think of the possibilities that the private sector would invest in these properties. 

 

I drive by the area quite often as my family was excited to see what kind of park would be built there in the hopes that it would improve the area, not ruin the area.  Kept waiting to see proposals and designs to be submitted or even a public meeting to discuss and put the project out to tender, you know like something against corruption.   Instead of investing in your city, you're selling it off as fast as possible to who ever pays the most.  Disgusting.

I remember back in 2008 when they started the waterfront they were going to build butique shops all the way along.look how that turned out same as Waterfront

Some did build...but for some reason they where quite quickly shut down and demolished ,with the exception of one Thai disco/karaoke place at the far end next to the marine rescue center...after that the speed boats moved in also evicted not long ago but now the land is suddenly available for "investment"

Someone opening a stall might mean that they have invested their life savings along with all hopes and dreams....shortly after "the powers that be" move the goal post or change their minds then the "investment" is all for nought.

I agree,  It looks like they slapped down and a new load of asphalt painted it blue. and have turned it into the parking lot on the opposite side of the road, half is for buses and the other half is roped off for vehicles parking at 100 a day or 200 overnight per day.   I wonder where that money goes?
