Yet, Britain has a very similar set of deductions for rental property taxation as the US, which makes the advice/observations given that Thai deductions of 30% (gross) apply on foreign remitted rental incomes, equally invalid and assumptive. Frozen in time: British expats losing out on pensions in Thailand
It's not for leaving the UK. There are places you can retire to where your UK pension isn't frozen. - Spain (in fact pretty much anywhere in Europe), the US, Jamaica, the Philippines, etc. The Philippines makes a lot of sense for Brits as an alternative to Thailand. You can pay to join their national universal healthcare scheme (which you can't do in Thailand), and your pension doesn't get frozen. Maybe you get a few more Typhoons and the food isn't as good, and how useful the universal healthcare is maybe an issue if you've retire to a place that's a long way from a state hospital, but if you're at a point where you are dependent on your state pension going up with inflation, it's probably the better bet than Thailand. -

Is Thailand Value for money
For me, Thailand has been good value ever since I moved here. Depending on lifestyle choices, I can see how it wouldn't be good value for others though. -

Just ran away instead of helping. Was plenty of time to open the rear door, the roof top hatch which I assume was there. Push out the side emergency windows which the kids probably had no idea they could do or were too small or weak to do. -

The school busses I rode on here in the USA as a kid were right in the middle of the baby boom in the 1960s and early 1970s. Big old yellow school busses. No seat belts. No padding on the back of the set in front of you. Made us sit three in each of the seats meaning our little arses were half on the seat half off the seat if you were the last one in that seat. I don't recall the side windows being emergency push out like newer busses have. I am pretty sure there was no roof egress hatch either. Not that any of us could have reached that roof hatch anyway just like the children on that Thailand bus probably were too young and short to reach either. -

Your Two Months Rental Deposit
It sounds like a badly worded contract. It probable boiled down to "two months' rent as a deposit for rent and damages etc". The is no legally enshrined limit on rent or damage security bonds. The amount is defined by the rent amount times two. that has nothing to do with the defined purpose of the deposit as a whole. also, you are lucky that your contract didn't (or did it, in fact?) state that the rent is due at a certain date, plus maybe an extra 7 days period of grace. That goes for every month, including the last one, as rent is always due in advance. My contracts always stipulate (and this is enshrined in Thai law as well) that failure to pay the rent - at any stage of the contract period - within the deadline (due date + 7 days) - constitutes a default of contract, resulting in the immediate termination of the agreement (i.e. eviction) and forfeiture of the entire deposit (without any further consideration of other potential deductions for damage etc). End of. Contracts vary a lot, it's always good to read and understand them, and not sign them if they do not suit. That avoids conflict and false accusations of landlords being scammers. -
