  1. I think it's mainly the old farangs who complain, Songkhran is for the young or young at heart, not the serial whiners on Internet forums.

    It's not only the old farangs who complain, it's also the younger farangs who needed hospital treatment because the so "called young at heart" didn't play by the rules, because during these days they think that's allowed.

    I still have a scar above my eye, because one of those "young at heart" farang was throwing buckets of water at us, but he accidentally forgot to take out the Lumps of Ice.

  2. I'll be returning to Pattaya tomorrow around four PM, how is the traffic situation in Sukhumvit between the ramp from road #7 and klang ? Is it drivable or must I find another route ?

    I think it will be oke (but no guarantees). The major "playing" days are the 18th and 19th, on these 2 days all bets are off.

    Which other route could you drive to reach Pattaya Klang ?

    You could (coming from the #7) instead of turning left onto Sukumvit, you could turn right (towards North Pattaya) and take the first Soi. (which is Sukhumvit 32) If you drive straight one, this Soi will take you to Soi Yumee, Soi Yumee is the Soi which passes Carrefour BIG C Extra.

    In any other culture around the world, this insanity would be met with strong opposition from law enforcement and ended in short order. Only in Pattaya . . .

    You are totally correct and what you have described is not the normal Thai. So I take it you want Pattaya to be normal Thai and everything that goes with it ? Or just Songkran ? Or maybe a few cherry picked things ? Tried to get a couple of people to answer this but no luck yet.

    Pattaya will never ever be Thai, it is Thai because it's located in Thailand, but from the outside it isn't Thai. Ever heard of a Contradictio in terminis ?

    Ok so I agree with you. So I think what you are saying is Pattaya is not normal Thai (as above) so non Thai activities happen but you just don't want this particular non thai activity to happen called Pattaya Songkran. Have I assumed correct ?

    No you don't !

    Songkran is traditional Thai, as such, I love Songkran when played with respect but not when it's done Pattaya Style aka done with trying to inflict the most harm and thus not enjoying the true spirit of it, which is RESPECT.

  5. I don't think the issue with hating SongKran has anything to do with getting wet (We get wet every day in the shower (I hope so wink.png), it has to do with the violence, the disrespect and people who try to do bodily harm, because they think they can during these insane couple of days.

    Fair enough but those people are not in the majority.

    Well if people on here are so obsessed with things being the "normal Thai" way I wonder if you guys would like everything else we love about Pattaya to become traditional Thai. We all know that would change alot around here. Any takers for a normal Thai life adhered to 100%, or are we just cherry picking what we want !!! Yeah thought so.

    Unfortunately those people are in a majority on Soi 3,4,5,6,7,8.9.10.11,12, 13, 13/1, 13/2, WS, Soi Bukaow .

    Why don't people get it, Pattaya isn't Thailand, Pattaya is a surrogate City which caters to Foreigner because with out the Foreigners (Europeans, Americans, Russians, Japanese, Korean etc etc etc) this city wouldn't even exists.

    Go and visit Nong Bua Lamphu or any other of the 74 Provinces (Minus Chonburi and Nong Bua Lamphu) to see what real Thailand is like and how they play Songkran over there

    I agree with the observation.

    So can I take it from that you want Pattaya to be like normal Thai or you don't, or would you just like some things to be normal Thai but other things non normal Thai ?

    And yes I have visited other provinces, plenty of people getting wet.

    Pattaya will never ever be normal Thai, how could it ? Friends coming over for a visit, they just care about Bars / Women and when trying to get them over to a Visit to a rural village and experience the real Thai life, is met with a lot of this and that and always ends up with excuses not to go.

    And the rant didn't have anything to do with something you said, just something that was bothering me a long time ago already.

    You don't need port forwarding to download torrents.

    Port forwarding is to direct specific unsolicited incoming traffic to a specific IP on your internal LAN - for example if you're running a web server you'd direct port 80 to a specific machine, and ports 25 and 110 to another machine hosting email, port 53 to your DNS server, etc...

    Your router "sees" which port you're running uTorrent on, so it directs the incoming traffic on that port to your IP without you needing to set up port forwarding. Prove it by changing the port uTorrent is using. It'll still work, without you needing to do anything at the router end.

  10. I have head rumours that they are getting rid of the need to have 400k in bank and only issuing visas if you can prove 40k a month?

    Can you shed any light on this? I have been married for 2 years, first baby due August, I do not live in Thailand as I work overseas but my wife and child to be are staying in Thailand, I intend to move there in 4-5 years time,(I'm 45 now) is it easier to wait until I'm 50 and get a retirement visa or apply for a visa on humanitarian grounds for my Thai family?

    any info welcome

    Didn't they try to do that a couple of years (5-6 years) ago, but then reversed it ?

    Ps: Pattaya has the requirement for first time applicants to also have a witness present that gets interviewed by the immigration Official. For subsequent visits this isn't necessary. (I have no idea if this is also a requirement in other Immigration Offices)

  12. If you are the paranoid type you could do all your banking at the teller window and decline to have an ATM card linked to your account. Also, keep all your teller-window transaction records so if there is anything amiss, it would have to have been an inside job.

    You know when you say "at the teller window"?

    I wonder does it mean ONLY inside a bank, or can one of the exchange booths dotted around the place be used, with only a passbook? I am talking of booths belonging to the likes of Kasikorn, etc.

    It would be handy to do it that way, instead of joining a long queue inside a bank

    I think he means a teller within the Bank, the people at the exchange booths are (in my opinion) only authorized to do (as the name already suggests) currency exchange. To be 100% sure you have to ask them if you can do withdrawals from them with only your Bank Book and your passport / id card, but I sincerely doubt it that you can, but I agree that it would be handy to use them :D

  13. Yes but you normally need about 15 days remaining on current permitted to stay - so if not enough time you can either enter again or go to a Consulate to obtain the non immigrant O visa using marriage certificate/spouse ID card and home register copies.

    Will I definitely need to show the 400k in the bank?

    Or 40k of income a Month (Statement issued by your Embassy)

    It has to be 400,000 Baht in the bank OR 40,000 Baht a month.

    (6) In case of marriage with a Thai lady, the husband who is an alien must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit in a local Thai bank of not less than 400,000 baht for the past 2 months for expenses within a year.

  14. In my condo (Central Pattaya) no problem, we only had a minor electricity cut yesterday afternoon, but it only lasted for a couple of minutes.

    I'd already expected problems with Water during Songkran, I think the PWA is running during Songkran at full capacity just to keep every one supplied with water, and outages for a couple of hours aren't that bad, if it there where outages for days at a time I would worry.

    Most houses have water tanks which gives them a couple of days of supplies, else get numbers from Water Trucks they run through whole of the City (200 - 300 THB for about 1600 Liters of Water)

    And these ones aren't even that powerful, what would have happened if she got hit with water coming from one of those PVC pipe canon things. Major Disaster.

    This is why the morons aim for the eyes, hoping to cause a crash. I have seen them in Soi Buakhow, whooping and hollering, giving each other high fives when this happens. The policeman on the newsclippings thread had the right idea!

    What !!!!!!!!!!!

    People are actually cheering and clapping when they caused a crash ???? There are no descent words that can describe this kind of behavior.

    As one poster described it : The respect is gone. or mentioning a song by The Black Eyed Peas, "Where is the Love ??"
